core i3 540
2x4gb DDR3

is it possible to run the game with this CPU?
if yes which card/s will do a nice job.
not looking for the best of the best

thanks

Solution
If you plan on keeping the GPU and upgrading other components (CPU, RAM and so on) later, go for the 960, it will do just fine at 1080p.

But if you plan on just playing a bit for the moment and get like a whole new system next year or something like that go for the 950.

Keep in mind that whatever you choose, the i3 will still be a problem ecpecially in new games and CPU demanding games, because it's a dual core. To run new games smooth you'll need atleast a quad core, preferably an i5 of the newer generations. (4/6)
But a third gen i5 will still do totally fine in games paires with something like a 960.
Hmm. You can get a GTX 960 without your CPU bottlenecking too much of the power. If that is too much, you can consider an AMD, of which I do not really know of(an R9-285 perhaps?).

*Update* i just read about the cpu bottlenecking the 960. You should look into a 500 series instead. GTX560 should be fine with your cpu without bottlenecks.

Yes, anything up to a Geforce 960 or a Radeon 285/380 (same card, different name), would be fine.

For the best bang for the buck I'd recommend a Geforce 950, because they're not hugely slower than a 960 and about $150. If that's over budget the Geforce 750TI is a bit less.

The CPU can sometimes bottleneck a 960 apparently. I didn't even know it could but apparently it wont do very well...

You can get a 960, which is advantageous for when you get a better CPU in the future as it is a power-efficient card, but for now, you won't be expecting a whole lot compared to a 560 due to the CPU bottleneck.

Agreed.

"A CPU bottleneck is when a CPU is incapable of keeping up with other hardware, generally the graphics card, in a certain task. You will experience subpar FPS, slowdowns, or in worst case scenarios a stuttery near unplayable gaming experience. Unlike with a GPU where you can increase the FPS by lowering the in game settings or resolution, for the most part there isn't a way to reduce a CPU bottleneck (some in game settings like shadows, lighting, view distance, or other game specific options can help reduce CPU strain but only to an extent). This is why it is important that you pick the right CPU for the games you wish to play." adapted from reddit. Thank reddit gods.

That's a good combination for a sweet spot pc. Mine is all-guns-blazing since I use it for video editing and other workstation loads. But I do game on it and actually it doesn't do that well(as games can't use a lot of cores) in gaming performance. 45fps bottomline is good enough for me though.

A GTX950 is probably the most your CPU can handle, and you should get playable framerates at 1080p with lowered settings. GTA V has great optimization so it could work. But the biggest problem is the dual core limitation here.

which is the cause of it bottlenecking most graphics cards out there.
