I'm trying to figure out which gtx 670 to go with. I have it narrowed down to EVGA 670 ftw vs Asus 670 dcii vs Msi power edition. I know performance will vary from game to game, so I don't want to base the decision on that since lots of games will be released while I have this card. I was originally deciding between the Asus and the evga, but the msi power edition has received some good reviews and is a little cheaper. I know the coolers are better on the Asus and the msi, but the step up program is tempting too. I guess I'm looking for opinions on longevity and which can handle overclocking better. Not so much which will overclock higher, but which will handle it better in the long run.

I5-2500k (still stock clock)
Z68ma-d2h-b3 mobo
8gb @1600mhz
750w psu
Samsung 830 256gb
Asus xonar essence stx

That's a bit on the low side, certainly not "For The Win". I definitely suspect the chip for your less than stellar overclocks.

If you are getting close to 1200 MHz, that's still pretty good. Keep in mind that the Turbo Boost on the GTX 670 will boost higher or lower depending on the available power envelope, which will differ from game to game. Make sure you have good airflow to maximize your overclock.

Here's a couple reviews of your card for comparison:

I just had it get up to 1176 in unigine heaven 3.0. Ultimately, I plan on getting another 670 in the future for sli instead of buying into a whole new series. I don't want to get one with an ASIC score of 90+ in the future and have it brought down to match the other. If I can get it exchanged, would that be a reasonable idea? couldn't do much worse than 70% I guess.

Returns at Fry's are usually pretty easy. Your overclock is not too bad, though. I would consider the return, all they can say is "no", but you also run the risk (minimal) of getting a chip with even lower ASIC quality.

Returns at Frys are embarrassingly easy. I returned the 660 ti the other day to upgrade, and a 550 ti a while back when I decided to wait for Kepler, and both times they never asked why and thought both boxes were unopened. With as many items that are on the shelf with the reduced price on them, I don't think they care at all. Even with luck of the draw, I really couldn't imagine getting a much lower score than 70%.

Try to get gigabyte 670 next time for SLI and see if it's a better overclocker. I'm pretty sure it is. 😉

I was considering exchanging the ftw for it. My gigabyte 460 still runs great, so it'd probably be a great choice. I went with evga for their great reputation, the step up program, and the great chance for a great card. Checking through the forums, it seems like the ftw is a little hit and miss. I'm sure all the brands have the same issue, but buying a new card usually involves the hope of perfection that doesn't come with the card.

Check the website I posted way earlier, and you can see that GB 670 is a better over locker than a GB 680.

I got a evga 670 ftw. I emailed evga customer support asking about the 70%. I was of course told that the ASIC was the wrong thing to go by, that I needed to get 3dmark11 and compare to other 670 ftw's. They of course don't consider the fluctuation in scores due to other hardware.

I picked up one already. The overclock isn't doing so great, and the ASIC value is only 70%. I'm thinking it's all good enough, but wondering if I can swing something better on an exchange.

The moral of this entire thread is, overclocking capabilities are always the luck of the draw... in addition to each individual hardware setup when compared to a reviewer's open bench.

After some tinkering I got it up to 1260ish clock, and haven't messed with the memory yet. It was at max power target and voltage, but a decent amount. Not sure if that'll change when I adjust voltage and power target, but we'll see. Have many people made it to 1300 and above?

1260 is pretty good 😉
