which is better for gaming at 1080p. ryzen 7 1700 or i7 7700 (non k)

Well if you go for 7700k then yes because you can get to 4.8 ghz but in this situation you can get the ryzen to 4 ghz which makes the ryzen almost equal to 7700 which can achieve 4.2 ghz. So i7 7700k > ryzen 1700 > i7 7700 in my personal opinion. This is exclusively for gaming.

The Ryzen will probably be more future proof.
I say 'probably' because it all depends on the developers.
However with the rivalry from ryzen, intel has already announced that they will add 2 more cores to the gen8 (coffee lake) i7, so more cores seems the way to go.

Your motherboard will also be cheaper with ryzen (or come with better features for the same price).
However with ryzen you also want to have high clocked memory, because a 1700 paired with 3200Mhz memory beats a 1800X paired with 2133Mhz memory in games.
Ryzen really likes higher clocked ram in games, more than higher cpu clock.
Since ram has gone up in price and high speed ram isn't cheap, that does eat into the price/perfmormance ratio that ryzen offers.

If future proofing is not what you are looking for and you want to know which is best right now.
Then the 7700 wins, hands down.

Unless you pair the 1700 with fast memory (3200Mhz+).

I agree but intel is comming out with newer 4 core 8 thread cpus again. By the time games start using 6 cores or more wont be for several yrs to come yet. Thats why the 8 threads is still giving the 7700k better fps over ryzen in games that are utilizing more then 4 cores
