I think the 3 titan X setup would be better because some games dont support SLI so you would want the stronger smaller amount of GPU's also with 12gb of VRAM for high resolutions.

Well SLI doesn't scale well with 4 cards so a 3 card Titan would probably be better and it will have plenty of Vram for super high resolutions with all the eye candy turned on. A 3 card super high clocked 980TI SLI would do the trick as well just would only have 6GB of VRAM but it may cost a bit less. One thing to remember is that Pascal is right around the corner. Also we still don't reallyknow how DX12 is going to run on current gen cards.
