the seagate is $65 and the WD is $85 which of the two would have the best read and write speeds and which is overall better

Same but I would go with the Seagate. If you are really interested in R/W speed go with a SSD.

Buy the one with the best warranty if it fits your budget. You will see no real world differences using either one. You can measure differences using various benchmarks, but in this case they do not matter to what you will experience in a system. BTW if it was my choice I would take the WD drive.

thanks i don't know if this makes a difference but the seagate i can get for $70 and the WD for $85

If you have Ivy/Sandy bridge with SRT tech possible. (google it)
link either with a small SSD and you'll get great speeds.
But both are mechanical, with iffy reliability. Keep backup(s)
