Which is the better deal?

I am trying to figure out which laptop to purchase and I have found two that I think would work well for me. I am not too familiar with computer technology and I would like to know which is the better computer/deal.

What will be your main and secondary uses for it? How important is battery life?

I would use the laptop mainly for general uses..internet, itunes, photos, and not neccessary but it would be nice if it could do casual gaming if I ever got into that.

Battery life is not a huge factor. Of course longer battery life would be good but not a huge deal.

I was leaning towards the sony but I wasnt sure.
I dont need the laptop for anything crazy and really just wanted the best "bang for the buck". I wanted to spend under $1000.
I just wanted to get a laptop with good speed, enough memory size to hold all of my music and photos, a blu ray drive and do casual.
Would both of those fit the description? Which one is better? Are there any other options out there for me?

The HP is a big laptop, the Sony is a portable one.
I like the CPU on the Sony better, but the choice is really yours.
