Ok, here is the system run down:
Precision 690
1000W chassis
dual X5365 Xenon 3Ghz quad core CPus
memory risers with 64gb DDR2 Fully buffered ECC memory
PCI riser for dual graphics
PREC 5i raid controller
(will be running 4 drives in RAID 1+0, just haven't chosen drives yet)

Will be used for 3D modeling, SolidWorks and AutoDesk Inventor

I am stuck between the Quadro K600 cards and the Quador FX 4600 cards. I will be running dual cards, non SLI and quad monitors. The card specs are so confusing for a mech engineer like me, I was hoping some of you computer guys could help me out. Which combo oc identical cards will give me better performance for my 3D modeling tasks? I know there are better cards out there, but I don't want to invest a fortune in this older workstation. These two card options are close to the same price point.

Thanks!

Its a tough question. The FX 4600 is old (9 years or so) and I wouldn't count on driver support much longer. The k600 is newer but wimpy. I would go with the newer card just to take advantage of newer technology and newer drivers, but you may want to also consider the k620 for not much more.

It is also worth serious consideration using a GTX consumer card instead of a professional card. Most can still be used with pro apps. You won't get the level of support or some features like mosaic (perhaps) or 10 bit color, but you will be able to take advantage of 3d acceleration. Their performance will be greater and their price less. This $150 card advertises the ability to drive 4 displays and has 640 CUDA cores for compute power: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125502

if your going 3d rendering to see how parts look in the real world, buy better gpus. gpu renders look awful unless you shell out the money for Octane. or iray. If your a cad designer, you should really just get yourself 2 GTX cards, either a pair of 660s, 760s or 960s. if you need precision, and soildworks and inventor support it for you kind of work, get amd r9 280x or 290s. the faster 2x precision is much worth it in time.

Well, I ended up running a little short on funds for the build. So I went with the dual FX4600 cards for now, mainly because I got two of them used for $80. This way I can set up my quad monitor array and when I uograde cards later I won't be too upset chunking the old cards.
