I'm looking to install a mM.2 2280 SSD into my Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 laptop but I am unsure about which one to get as I see a lot of discussion about things such as dram, tlc vs qlc and I wonder how much it matters to me. The M.2 slot is a PCIe 4.0x4.

What I need this 2nd ssd for is to store another OS and so I am also wondering if it would be better to boot off the new ssd I am getting or the one I already have. (Currently have the KGB40ZNT5612G but couldnt find any information on flash memory type or whether it has dram but it works fine for me).

Currently ive looked at the following options:
- P5 (€40 eu for 500gb)
- 970 evo plus (€40 for 250gb, €54 for 500gb)
- P3 (€33 eu for 500gb) seems to not be ideal as boot drive but if booting off of the stock drive is recommended this seems like a good choice.

Which one of these or which other ones do you guys recommend for me?
I also dont need it to be super fast particularly and I dont want it getting too hot under load.

Hey there,

PCIe 3 drives are a lot cooler. You can reach pretty high speeds in and around the 3000-3500mb/s read/write.

I'd ditch the P3, and it's a tossup between the 970 evo plus and the P5. Read/writes are mostly the same. Cam't seem to find much on the P5's random reads/writes. For the Evo though.

Random reads for the Evo are 271k and writes are about 217. This is from my own 970 Evo. I use it as a boot drive.

Thanks for your input, looked more into the crucial p5 and heat in general and decided to go for the sn570 which is also 40 euros. Choosing it as its supposed to run cool and although I will probably be fine most of the time it will give me ease of mind.
