Which Microsoft software officcer foundation?

I notice that Microsoft offered SharePoint as foundation free to the public. It doesn't have all the features in it. Which I'm OK with that until I figure out if i am going to use it or not. But I'm wanting to know if there are any other Microsoft products that are like that? I download SharePoint off of Microsoft website. But I couldn't find any other programs. Can anyone help me on this one? And I'm NOT going to break code or put in fake codes. I have to have legit software. I'm not the type of person to break the law on licensing.

There are many "free" Microsoft products, but they require legit OS underneat in order to run.

- SQL Server Express

What are your needs? It is not like you go down the street and collect every piece you find just because it is "free".

My company was looking at Sharepoint and Lync. And I was wondering what other products were out there that may help out production.

Microsoft SharePoint requires Microsoft SQLServer and Microsoft Windows Server to run. SharePoint (foundation included) includes an embedded variant of SQLServer 2008 SharePoint Edition which can be installed for use in a deployment which does not have another SQLServer installation available. SQLServer Express Edition is free to download and use, and is what I recommend for standalone SharePoint installations as it includes more tools than the SharePoint Edition that is included with the SharePoint installation package.

Windows Server does not have a free version but it is available for trial for a period of 180 days.

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 180 trial

Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Express with Advanced Services

Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2013

Those three products should be good enough to get you started to see if you wish to use it. You will have 180 days cost-free to make a decision

For SharePoint Foundation, no. It can live on the same Server2012 box. The necessary parts of SQLServer are installed with SharePoint Foundation. You don't need it on its own.

Be advised - SharePoint can be a complex beast. Used and administered properly it can be very powerful. Done a little wrong, and things will go missing, or people won't be able to get to what they need.

About 10 people. At the most 13 people. We have about 70 employees. But only about 13 people would need it.

Well...2 people can't edit the same doc at the same time.
Person 1 will have it 'Checked Out' and be editing.
Person 2 can either open a local copy, or open the original in Read Only.

Close, but not quite.

Here's the way it works:
A Document library, with 1 or more docs in it. Several people have Permissions to this Doc Library.
I open a Word doc. It is now 'Checked Out' to me. I am the only one that can currently edit that document.
I make some changes, and save. It automatically saves back to that same shared location.
You can then open it and see what I changed.

The advantage of this is that there is only 1 actual copy of the file, rather than emailing it around, and trying to merge multiple changes from multiple people.

Ok. That makes total sense.

Yeah, SharePoint does not enable Google-Docs style collaboration (which is its own mess) but it does enable very fast sharing. If used in conjunction with newer revisions of Microsoft Office an online document can be opened in place, edited, and automatically updated on the SharePoint site when saved. This is ideal for very short revisions. For longer revisions the document can be checkedout to prevent other users from editing it at the same time.

EDIT: the reason I recommended installing SQL Server Express Edition seperately rather than using the built-in SQL Server SharePoint Edition is because the SharePoint Edition does not come bundled with the SQL Server Mangement Tools which makes it somewhat difficult to tweak the SQL Server service. The management tools can be downloaded and installed separately though.
