Which MMORPG to play?

Trying to decide which MMO to start playing, I am currently deciding between the following:

1. Guild Wars 2
2. Neverwinter
3. Age of Wushu
4. Secret World
5. Lord of the Rings Online

Anyone have any suggestion of which are the most fun out of this list? I am done with WoW, it is just getting too old. I really liked GW2, but I got bored at 80 and haven't played in a few months.

Have you played the original Guild Wars? I have GW2, but hardly play it. Since I often play solo, the scaling just sucks. In most any other game, if an area is too tough, you just level a little then go back to it, but in GW2 that doesn't work too well. The constant respawns of stuff you've killed in many cases can make some relatively simple objective (like getting TO a skill-point challenge) almost impossible unless some other players happen along. GW2 has a much more vibrant, interesting world, but the non-instancing kills playability.
OTOH, I can still enjoy playing GW1, and the story lines are decent. That the graphics are older really doesn't matter if you enjoy the mechanics and the story.

The fast respawns are great in GW2 if you are grinding for regents.

I agree GW2 is a great MMO and the fact that there are no additional payment to play the game to it's fullest is a real nice thing.

LOTRO long in the tooth? LOL then you go onto saying you like SWTOR which has to be the most bland and epic fail of an RPG mmo in recent history.

God EVE was like a day job just to learn I quite that game because it was so boring.

Since most games are WoW clones (GW2 included), it's going to be tough to find one that you enjoy.

I've never played LotRO, but have heard it's great for PvE - there's no PvP.

Secret World sounds interesting, but it also sounds like they failed to properly capitalize on an interesting idea.

Rift is really good. It's really evolved since its early days when it was just another WoW clone.

SWTOR is just an awful game. It's a pure WoW clone that went F2P because they screwed up so bad. I played from launch for 2-3 months and had a lot of fun. The class stories are really good and the overall story itself is pretty solid, but they kept taking away reasons to even play the game with every patch. The game became completely shallow. I've heard the F2P side of the game is pretty awful, too.

I haven't read much about Neverwinter or Age of Wushu.

Darkfall and Eve are the only really unique games out there, to my knowledge (I haven't kept up and the last MMO that I was enthralled with was Shadowbane). They are truly persistent and player-driven games that are far less focused on using the grind to keep players p(l)aying. They rely on being player-driven.

In terms of gameplay experience at the moment, I think the MMOs would probably rank...
1. Eve
2. Rift
3. Guild Wars
4. LotRO
5. WoW
(Darkfall not included because the recent one is so fresh)

If WoW is too old, and you're bored with GW2, there's not too much more out there, every other MMO is based off of WoW in some way or another, since WoW was the first to do it right. Not the first, but the first to do it right. Maybe MMO's aren't for you anymore.

Hey Zealos,

This is a difficult question to answer outright since personal preferences will play a huge factor in determining whether or not you'll like a game. That said, I spent multiple years raiding in WoW (quit sometime during WotLK) and I bought GW2 on release day thinking it'd be the answer to my MMO needs. Well, I played it for a few weeks and put it down but have recently picked it back up. The lack of a subscription makes that part easy. All it took was one update and I could pick up right where I left off. Additionally, the developers seem to add content on a fairly regular basis. The game as a whole is worth trying out again if you haven't played it in a while.

Having said all that... Neverwinter is looking pretty promising as well. Being free to play my initial reaction was "Great, another pay to win grindfest." However, it offers a setting that I find attractive as well as the ability to create content/quests/dungeons that can be shared with the community as a whole. It's in open beta status so there's gonna be more fixes and tweaks along the way, but the only thing you have to lose by checking it out is time and bandwidth. If you don't like it, delete it and move on.

LOTRO is only free for up to level 25-30. in order to be able to play on higher level mob maps, you have to purchase the expansion kits which could amount up to $100++ if ya got a good budget, i suggest you go for it as LOTRO is one hell of an MMO. GW2 is quite good too i hear. I would suggest Ragnarok Online 2 but based on the games you listed, it might not fit your style. anyhoo, Tera is worth giving a shot too.

have a look at tera online
I think theres a mod somewhere that gives the castanic more clothes if that's off putting

neverwinter I find has floaty combat not as good as tera and guild wars two has action combat lite™ and for some reason it takes me ages to level up either i'm playing wrong or its a slow levelling process
