Hi there, i mainly use my pc for gaming, but also for video editing, im selling my phenom 9750 and upgrading to a........ heres where you guys come in

i want something that is gunna be a beast for performance, and not bottleneck my 4890, my budget is fairly limited, so i have narrowed it down to these 2 choices.

or

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/166518

which do you reckon i should go for? i been told that anything 3ghz or over should not bottle my gcard, i know the 720 is only 2.8 but i got a friend who has oc'd that to 3.1 with no problems, so yeah all and any advice would be greatly appreciated

alternatively, if anyone knows of a cpu that is better value for money and will serve me better than my 9750, then please feel free to let me know, under 100 is my budget at the minute, but i can stretch further in a couple of months, if there is going to be a price drop or whatever

Both chips will suit you well but it all depends on how fast you want to go.... The 550 will achieve a higher overclock but then again the 720 has an extra core.. I use my 550 for gaming and to this date I have not had any kind of bottleneck whatsoever....

You can also wait a couple of months and see if prices drop on the older quads....

thanks for the advice dude, well my pc used to be pretty much all about video editing, then i got hooked on games again, which hadnt happened since my 9800xt :) miss that card :) i dont really want to overclock majorly to be honest, thats why i thought i higher stock speed would be better, i dont know if i care to much about going quad core again or not really, just so long as my system doesnt have any set backs, thats the main concern here

Well I have my 550 @ 3.9Ghz (dualcore) and it is stupid fast.... Too fast for my needs at the moment..... Later on when the 955 comes down in price I might get me one just to see if the other 2 core's are really needed.... As far as gaming goes I can play ANY game w/o any hicups.... The only game that gives me issues is Crysis and GTA4 ( using xAA ).... Other than that it wont break a sweat.....

how much of a mission was it to overclock? or did you just alter the multiplier? do you have really good aftermarket cooling? i have a beast of a zalman heatsink and fan, 3.9ghz is beastly :)

Well I have been doing this for quite a while, so for me it's not hard to achieve a high clock unless im dealing with a low-end motherboard...

As far as gettin my CPU to 3.9Ghz, I had to raise the multiplier, voltage (both on the CPU and NB), leave the NB frequency @ 2000Mhz, raise the chipset voltage to 1.15v and most important make sure my ram is 100% stable...

As far as my cooler, i use an AC freezer 64 and it has been flawless so far....

My motherboard is not the best option for overclocking but it has been fairly easy for me due to the fact that i have been messing around with it for a couple of months....With the 790FX you should be able to get some good clocks if you decide on a 550, 720, 955 or 965.....

thanks for the help man, really appreciate it, i tested all my components vigorously, and i do it regularly, everything is 100% flawless at the minute, im lookinf for somewhere to part ex my cpu, but after looking on ebay now, my processor is going for more second hand than a new 720, so may just go with that, or may upgrade further to be honest! didnt think i would get so much for it! so basically the bottom line here is, if i get something whether it be dual, tri or quad core, as long as it is over 3ghz im looking at no bottlenecks?

sidetrack, with my heatsink are my temps to high in your opinion? im idling at around 45 degrees its the zalman cnps 9700 led, i got this because i have heard really good things about it, but still.... my cpu seems to run to hot? am i right saying that?

It all depends, most games wont utilize more than 2 cores specially when overclocked to a high degree... If you are the kind that has 5 apps running all the time or lets say the apps you run are very CPU intensive, a tri or quad will suit you better.... if not the dual core is more than enough......

As far as temps go it really depends on your, case, fans, cable management and ambient temperature....

I use an Antec 300 with some modifications, good cable management, all 5 fans on high (gaming or HD viewing) and my ambient temps most of the time are at 28c or lower.... My CPU and GPU temps never reach 56c no matter what I do.... If the ambient temp hits 30c or higher then my temps can skyrocket over 59c or higher....

i got the big zalman beast on the cpu, 2 80mm case fans at the back, a fox1 pci blower and a 120 mm sucking in air from the front, when gaming they are all maxed, ambient temps never fall below 40, i think i need to add a couple of fans to the side of the case to be honest with you, case modding is definately not my strong point though, lol im a mixture in between those 2 types of people you mentioned, i think im gunna go tri or quad, thanks for all the help dude

45c idle is hot unless your room temp is around 80f or higher... You might want to re-paste the cpu and make sure you have adequate airlfow inside the case.....

gunna try installing another case fan to the front of the cpu to help push airflow to the back, i figured it was a bit high, if that doesnt work i will re-apply thermal paste once i install the new cpu and see if that helps. cheers again dude

No, problem..... make sure you place a very small amount of paste and spread evenly..... I normally place the paste on the cooler and not on the cpu.... it's easier for me that way and safer since I know I wont drop any on the board......

Let me know if you need anything else......

nice one dude i just installed a new case fan, took it from an old heatsink and fitter it to the system fan on the mobo, blowing cold air directly toward cpu heatsink, works well but a bodge job! will need to get someone to cut a hole in the side of the case so im able to mount one on there

This is what I did to my 300 just for kicks...... you should be able to do it your self with some painters tape, measuring tape and a jigsaw.... its not really that hard....

this is a link to a pic of my pc, excuse the stupid athlon sticker i dont want to take it off cuz im keeping all the stickers for all the upgrades i get on there (until it looks really *** that is)

this is the front of it, just so you know what it looks like.

thinking of removing that stupid windows cd key sticker and mounting a fan there, then using the sys fan connector that is below the graphics card. would you say the cables are restricting to much airflow in there?

thats the thing im not sure, i bought it off a mate of mine and he had no idea what it is, theres no brand on it anywhere, i have only seen one other case like it and i emailed the dude with it and asked him, he never got back to me, its bugging me though cuz the front connectors are really weird, and i want audio and usb on the front, ah well, hopefully someone will be able to enlighten me, im in the process of tucking away extra cables at the minute, and im fashioning another 80mm case fan to attach to the back of the cpu heatsink to provide extra cooling :)

moved a couple of cables around now, sorted that bodge job fan so it is blowing directly towards the cpu cooler! now sitting at 38 ambient, gunna put a hole in the side of the case for another 80mm fan i reckon, should sit cool as then!

cool, think im gunna get someone who knows their stuff to help me, cuz im a bit worried, especially as i dont know the case model should i need a replacement side panel!
