[SOLVED] Which PSU do you recommend?

Hey all,

I'm planning to get a PSU for my build (Ryzen 5 3600, RX 5700xt and B550M VDH-WIFI mobo), and currently on a budget. Thinking of getting one of the following, and wanted to see what ppl's recommendations are?

  1. Gigabyte GP-P550B 550w 80+ Bronze Power - $65 on sale (https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_1938&item_id=173124)
  2. EVGA 600 BA, 80+ BRONZE 600W - $70 on sale (https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_1938&item_id=171973)

You would determine the quality by looking at a professional review of the the power supply. Without a proper review its hard to reccomend a unit because the information a manufacturer provides and the 80+ level is not enough to say if a PSU is good or not.

There are several things that make a PSU higher quality than another one. Things like component quality can change how long a PSU will last. Protections can help prevent damage to both the PSU and PC in certain scenarios, and some cheaper PSUs do not have as many protections as higher end ones. The overall design of the PSU can also effect how reliably it can power a system and how well it can handle high loads, spikes, etc. Outdated designs can have problems reliably powering...

I don't recommend any of those cheap, lower quality models. You need a good PSU for the demanding 5700 XT. A power supply is a safety device that your system depends on to protect everything connected to it. Cheap models can put your system at a much higher risk. Good quality models cost more money and there's no way around it. Here are my recommendations-

Archaic's options are all good options. Your options are not.

The time to be on a budget was when selecting the GPU. Now, you need a proper PSU to run the GPU. A PSU that can safely run your components for a decade is the most important of build and the last place you trim the budget. The important stuff comes before the fun stuff. If budget is absolutely a problem, return it the RX 5700 XT, get an RX 5700 instead, and use the difference to get a proper PSU.

As stated none of those are good for a gaming machine.
What will really determine what kind of psu you need is your GPU.
And you have a 5700xt which is power hungry and will put a fairly heavy load on the 12v rails.
You will spend about $100 for a higher quality power supply.
Remember, wattage is how much power it can deliver.
Rating has to do with efficiency. (How much of the energy pulled from the wall is wasted when converting it and giving it to the components)

Quality is how it was built, what components it uses, how much amperage it can handle on the 12v rails.

Higher quality uses higher quality components and goes through stricter quality checks to ensure it meets proper spec. Which all costs more money.

But you don't need gold.

What you want is 650 to 750w.
Bronze or gold.
Modularity is whatever.
And that it is quality built.
