I'm more of a gamer than tech guy. I have a PG279Q Asus, and i5-6600K. I would like all my games to run at 144 min. My GTX 970 is doing a pretty good job so I expect the 2080 will be a huge upgrade.

Wait for reviews later this month, or at the beginning of the next. Nvidia is running the hype train on this gen at max speed.
Early adopters beware, especially with new tech. I suspect folks with 10-series gpus won't see these as a worthwhile upgrade.
You're not currently using a 10-series, but still. The whole raytracing fiasco isn't going to be 'OMG HUGE PERFORMANCE GAINS' as it's going to take time to implement. Look at DX 12, and how long it took for games to start using more then 2 and 4 core cpus.

It may still be an improvement for you though. Just maybe not a big one.

even with ray tracing if it was enabled the fps was around 40-50 max at 1080p so basically gotta ask your self-does raytracing mean that much to you if not go with a 10 series they have decent sales going on and will continue to have sales until launch

I think that's only with ray tracing enabled games and only a few games will have ray tracing; heard the RTX 2080 should be 30% faster than the 1080Ti.

I guess I wouldn't mind ray tracing for Shadow of the Tomb Raider and BF V.
