Hello,

I am planning to upgrade my CPU really soon. I am going to upgrade it to a Skylake build. I am going to overclock the CPU for sure.

I think i will get the Asrock B150m Combo-G. Shall i get the i5 6400 and overclock it to the same clockspeed as the i5 6600? Will that save me some money, it will be basically be ths same CPU then, right?

Greetings

Solution
You can't really overclock a locked CPU, you need a CPU with a "k" in the end.
The i5-6600k is unlocked and overclockable.
It's not that you can't overclock the 6400, but it's not a good overclock.
Without a Z motherboard, you can't overclock the 6400, not even a little.
And for overclocking I really recommend a Z motherboard.

It will be the same, but I'm not sure if you can reach a stable overclock without a "k" in your CPU.
Z ,motherboards are more expensive than B motherboards, so think about it.

Yeah, 4.5Ghz overclock, you would need to run it on water for that and the guy just said he doesn't want to spend extra $$.

u can believe these guys or u can believe someone who has done it

Guys this is not a fight club, L0stChild is suggesting something and so are we.
If you OC without K and Z, B boards can't overclock even unlocked CPUs.
You can do a little BCLK overclocking, but it doesn't just overclock the CPU, it overclocks the whole system and can cause stability issues.

a little? define a little
ok lets say it overclocks the whole system.
ive had my computer for a week my results:
ZERO BSOD
ZERO FREEZES
ZERO NON BOOTS FOR ANY REASON
ZERO CRASHES
and in the meanwhile ive beaten 2 of my leaderboards and ranked 22 and 5x
doesnt sound like any cons to me and on top of that 4.5ghz isnt even the max i can push my cpu.
spending around $1000CAD sounds like a great deal to me rather than spending 500 on just a cpu then prob have enough for a mobo and half decent gfx card

Yes, but it will be differently for his build.

well which ever. ive already said 'before you buy anything, there are a few things you need to know about non-k oc'
and u already pointed out the mobo he has or wants to get wont support even with k series.
i mean these are simple things that can be looked up online.
what im offering is real life experience. and u cant deny that.
