Which would you choose? The AMD64 with an Nforce3-250 motherboard, or a
Pentium4 with either the 865 or 875 motherboard?

AmD and Nforce. With an ATI graphic card, it's unbeatable in games.

It depends.

Which tasks will you perform with the new computer?

The AMD64 and Nforce3 is a new player on the block, is is still in it's
first generation, so many iterations will come before it reaches it maximum
performance.
Intel, on the other hand, is coming to a phase-out of it's current products.

If you choose to go with the AMD64 you will be more future-proof, but
currently it's only Linux that is capable to utilize the 64 bits.

If you choose to go with Intel, you will get a mature products that is
reliable and stable. But if you desperatlely want the cutting edge, you will
have to buy new equipment in a year (or so) from now.

I would go for the Intel alternative, preferable the i875 chipset. choose a
pretty desent CPU, say P4 3.2GHz.
