Who's at fault? Windows 10 or Overclock?

Windows 10 has been running perfectly for my system right now, but there is only one problem that keeps occurring. Every once in a while (from 2x per day to 1x per 2 days) my system will force shut down for no reason during medium to heavy loads on the CPU (like gaming).

Does a overclock that's stable in windows 8.1 mean it's stable in windows 10?

Solution
I would undo the overclock and just save the settings. If you get another crash, it is another piece of hardware, or it is windows 10. I would not increase voltage as it may not help you determine if the clock is not stable or if the OS is having hardware compatibility issues.
It should be a stable clock for both so long as it was "truly" stable in windows 8.1 to begin with. When I first switched to windows 8 from 7, there were huge issues with my custom hardware that they had not properly hashed out yet. My recommendation to you is to undo your overclock until windows 10 becomes more stable. If it still crashes, create a ticket with microsoft and switch back to windows 8.1

Ok got it. Should I try putting more voltage into my CPU and see if that works? If not, then ill do what you said.

Ok then, ill go back to stock.

Ok just went back to stock. On the first boot up windows 10 would just sit idling on the login (saying welcome) after I typed in my password, I eventually just did ctrl alt del and restarted the PC in there. 2nd boot up is perfectly fine now.

Ill get back to you if I encounter any issues.

Win 10 is a little buggy, but remember if you are on it like I am from day one, these things are to be expected. For the most part most everything runs fine for me and games run fine but I've had to lower my overclock on my GPU by 50Mhz with win 10 but I'm sure it's driver related...hopefully. I'll get random freeze ups in games sometimes but not a whole lot, whereas with 8.1 it ran pretty damn smooth all the way around.

I'm sure after a few more updates and driver updates, things will get smoother...I like win 10 other than that though.

Agreed, I actually expect worse when switching from 8.1 to 10. Since I've always seen issues on previous upgrades (like from 7 to 8).

So far, everything is perfect except for that one issue I'm having. However it doesn't bother me since windows 10 will eventually get mature drivers.

[strike]Ok I think (not 100% sure but pretty sure) that it was my headset causing these issues. Back when I had windows 8.1, my headset kept kicking out every once in a while and I couldn't figure out why, so when I used them in windows 10 my computer was BSODing like before. However, I noticed now that if I switch my vengeance 1500v2 headset to 2.0 source instead of 7.1 surround the computer works very well. No BSODs yet in this configuration.[/strike]

Update: Ditch that. It still BSODed, right after I finished gaming. I'm going to uninstall AI suite 3...

Ok, so because the BSOD's have gotten worse my system will freeze every time I boot up unfortunately. So now I have to reinstall windows 10. Yes I know it sounds dumb to reinstall 10 and not go back to 8.1, but I think I need to roll back to a previous Nvidia driver to stop the BSODs.

Did you try going back to default bios settings or anything like that?

Yep I did, but that didn't work. However I think I fixed it. It was the Nvidia driver that was causing the issue, I was on the latest then when I reinstalled windows I prevented GeForce experience from updating to the latest drive but rather am now using 353.54 instead of .62. So far no problems, however i'm not 100% sure.

Okay thanks, I might try backing down to those drivers too cause I had to lower my gpu clocks a bunch with these new drivers but not sure if it's a combo of win 10 and these new drivers. Ahhhh some good ol war thunder...that's still one of my fav games.

Haha yep, War Thunder has been a favorite for me. For now it's also my GPU stress tester. 😛

Ok, I'm defiantly sure it's the GPU driver issue. I haven't had a single BSOD today!

Good to hear, hopefully it stays that way. I went back to 353.30 for win 10 but performance was the same...oh well, I'll just wait it out, it's still so soon since launch.

True.

Hey, you could try going to the .54 driver if you uninstall the NVidia driver completely then after the restart install the NVidia driver via windows update.

Ok.

Oh and BTW... My computer just BSODed again. But then I just realized I put my overclock back to 4.5ghz. I'm gona leave it back at stock for a few days to see if my OC is also causing the issue.

Hello there,

I am having the same issue with forced shutdowns without prior notice, even in moments like now when i am just browsing a forum or something. my cpu/ram/gpu run all on stock settings, and it only happens with Win10 - with Win7 it never happened before.
