I need to replace my drive and would like to see what your opinions are as to who has the best drive. I think I want to upgrade to 40 to 60 Mb udma/100 7200 rpm unless someone can change my mind. I am leaning toward Maxtor but Seagate and Quantum and Western Digital are still in the running.
What does everyone like?

You are going to get a bias answer for that question. I mean the bench marks aren't half bad for the IMB 75GXP but they aren't much better then the Maxtor drive. I have never had an IBM drive, but have had many Maxtor drives. I really like the Maxtor hard drives. I would go with the Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 60 series. That drive is 7200rpm and is ATA100.

Someone else will most likely give you an answer with IBM but the way I look at it, is it is all personal prefrence. Kinda like Ford and Chevy. I think Maxtor and IBM are to close to compare but the Maxtor hard drives can be found anywhere unlike IBM ... (thats in my area anyways)

Hope that helps! *:O)

Hey Lars was right...

I'm one of those that only use IBM, maybe because the one Maxtor I ever have had made too much noice, and the IBM's they are really really silent... Right now I'm useing one 75GXP 15GB, and one 75GXP 45GB...

Hopes it helps...

I personally prefer the IBM 75GXP and Quantum AS drives. The IBMs have an acoustic tool that you could use to make it quieter, with the penalty of some performance though.

Maxtor has the same Acoustic tool. As for the Quantum AS drive it has the Hydro Dynamic Bearing which is now in fact Maxtor's. That is what makes the Quantum perform somewhat better and makes it quieter ... kinda like the Fujitsu.
