Why Am I lagging

Why do I lag whenever 1 other device start using the internet (not just connected)

Whenever I am lagging i check my router page, I see that my laptop and a phone are the only ones actively using the internet. I even lose connection to steam.

My internet plan is 15mbps, My download speed is as advertised but my upload speed has troubles reaching 1mbps because it is a DSL connection. I am 5 steps away from the router. My router is a 300Mbps Wireless N Router TL-WR840N.

well wifi goes up and down at the best of times if you are near the router why not use Ethernet cable
