Why are games slow now, when they ran fine a few months ago?

I've only had my gaming PC for 5 months now so it's fairly new. When I first got it, I could run games perfectly with good graphics (I didn't use an fps counter back then but I could tell it was constantly between 25 and 60). I used to Red Orchestra 2 and DCS World with no problems with graphics or frame rate. But now when I try to play these games they are basically unplayable. Even on offline training mode in RO2 I can never get above 20, and even with graphics at the minimum I can never sustain above 25.

Does my PC have a virus? Am I not maintaining it properly? The games used to run perfectly so I know my specs are fine (I'll post below).

If anyone knows what has happened and how I can fix this problem and start running games like I could originally that'd be great.

Specs:
-Intel quad core i5-6500 3.2ghz cpu
-GTX 1050 2gb graphics
-16gb RAM
-Windows 10 64 bit OS

You must monitor your cpu and gpu temps during gaming. If they are exceeding 90 C you are going to have thermal throttling. Dust-off, clean up your pc, apply new thermal paste on the cpu. If the problem persists do a clean install of your OS.

P.S.: Have you checked for gpu drivers updates?

To monitor the temperatures, use either MSI Afterburner or CPUID HWMonitor.

I regularly check for GPU driver updates, so I know mine are up to date

I followed the steps and saw a slight increase in performance, but still nowhere near what I used to get.
According to MSI Afterburner the temperature never seems to get above 55 degrees C.

PS: I have Razer Cortex, an optimization program installed. Would that have anything to do with it?

Try to uninstall it and run the games again. With Windows 10 there is no need for "optimizations" as such. A fresh restart is all it takes to run your system clean. I would also recommend running mdsched and sfc /scannow to make sure there are no inconsistencies with your OS/Memory

Are you running Win 10? If so, could be this:

I've also had drives maxed out when they started to fail, antivirus programs that got stuck and needed to be reinstalled, and of course Win update going haywire. If possible, go into Resource Monitor and see if you can figure out what's accessing the disk so much

thanks for the help, but the link to the other post comes up with 'page not found'??
