just signed up with surfshark. however the killswitch feature doesnt work. no matter how many times i turn it on and off and reinstall and reboot. i have successfully gotten it to whitelist route the VPN to always be used with uttorent and i confirmed when the VPN is off that there is no downloading from uttorrent. but when i turn on the kill switch and then disconnect VPN i can still surf the web with all browsers, use drop box etc. surfshark online chat was useless and support ticket was put in and i got this:

official answer is:

Thank you for reaching out to us.

Since our application has to modify some of the system settings on your computer to establish a secure connection, some antivirus software might consider that a threat, although we can assure you this is not the case.

Our application creates a virtual network device on your computer. All of your encrypted traffic goes through this virtual network device. It also changes your DNS addresses, so you cannot be traced. Both of these are necessary to ensure your internet anonymity.

That being said, it is not Norton that specifically does not work with our services, it is the antivirus software in general.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

i really really find it hard to believe theres no way for norton to whitelist and allow the changes though. the program is allowed to pass thru norton. so thats no issue. why not the killswitch functionality be passed through too? i also turned off norton and it still didnt work right.

it totally boggles my mind that every user of a VPN is not allowed to use a killswitch unless they use no antivirus software. i simply cannot accept that as a truth. i think theres something wrong with the settings of my machine and they dont know how to fix it and i sure dont.

the vpn itself works fine. tested for leaks, the change in the IP address. even whitelisted my credit cards and bank accounts websites so they pass thru without VPN usage and i dont get nag screen to get a text code. and i'm still exploring all the other features

and since utorrent only works while the VPN is on, that part of the software works . it kills utorrent when im not on the VPN. thats the puzzling part. so far every function works perfect except killswitch but wouldnt the components of killswitch be used to kill utorrent when VPN is disconnected? im not a programmer but it seems so.

another strange discovery. every saturday when i do a full backup of the laptop. i turn off wifi, connect the ethernet cable, then acronis starts backing up on ethernet which is directly connected ONLY to the NAS.

then i turn back on wifi and i surf thru wifi while NAS gets the ethernet backup.

however today i couldnt get the ethernet backup to work no matter what. then i remembered DUH. i have the killswitch on. turned off the KS and the ethernet is now backing up to my NAS box

i just wish i knew enough about networking to solve the issue. someone has to be smarter than me :)

but if kill switch kills the ethernet , why not the wifi. (insert mysterious music here)

my latest reply to them..i narrowed this down:

I turned off Norton and reinstalled as directed and I have Windows 10. I also wanted to let you know that even though I uninstall the program when I go and reinstall it all of the settings are the same as before. I have discovered additional diagnostic information. the issue is when I route via VPN and that switch is turned on that's the Killswitch does not work and I am able to surf the Internet. I should note that are there are no apps checked to route via VPN at this time while doing my testing but I absolutely do want to use the uTorrent to Route via VPN. It is critical that uTorrent only works through with the VPN. So I believe the only way to do this is to root via VPN and add the app. I can also report that when the route via VPN is turned on and the uTorrent box is checked that there no connection while the VPN is disconnected which of course is the desired result. Also I have stop the program and restarted the program to make sure the settings take effect.

So in summary it seems like if I have the option to Route via the VPN on that I cannot use the kill switch to kill the remainder of my internet through my browsers
