Why do I keep finding I've unfollowed people on Instagram that I haven't?

This happens again and again and again. I find that some person I've previously followed I am no longer following and the person has locked their account (you have to request to follow). Now, maybe this person had their account open previously and now they've closed it, but why would that lead to me automatically unfollowing them?

Maybe they decided they want only friends and family following them, so they lock, but I highly doubt they then went through their list of followers and manually dropped people they don't know, including me.

I don't understand why this keeps happening. Is this some kinda bug, what's the explanation?

No, I'm not interacting with these people in any way. Not DMing, not commenting, not even liking their posts. I just follow and beyond that I'm invisible.

How do you contact them? I've used the report problem feature many times and have never gotten a response. Have they actually responded to you?
