I just wiped my old AMD drivers and installed a GTX 970. I downloaded the newest drivers from NVIDIA website. When I open games, they immediately pop into 1080i. They should be in 1080p, and they generally work in windowed mode at 1080p. does anyone have an idea why this is? how can I get it to stop? I *never* want to use 1080i, so if it meant deleting that option I would be completely happy

Try this, it might work.
First of all you need to TOTALLY remove all the old drivers. Use this link.

Note:
Select the respective company(i.e Nvidia or ATI) drivers to be uninstalled.
Use clean and restart option.
And then install the new drivers after rebooting.

Sadly, I tried that and no luck. Researching a bit, I think that it has to do with the EDID of my crappy Best Buy brand monitor. My theory is that some games are looking for the entry for 1920x1080 with the highest refresh rate, and my monitor is showing 60Hz 1080i but the 1080p is technicaly 59.9Hz.

My current workaround is to create a custom resolution of 1920x1079 at 60Hz with progressive scan. It is annoying, but I really don't notice the missing 1,920 pixels 😛
