Why do you have to format your SD card?

My phone is making me format my SD card, but I don't want to have it delete all my stuff off my phone. Do i have to format it? Or can I just leave it alone?

I'm not very good at phone stuff lol and I don't want to mess up my phone somehow by doing it or ignoring it.

I'd really appreciate someones help on this. The stupid message that keeps popping up is very annoying, ugh.

Your card is running out of space it seems. Backup the data and format it. Formatting erases all the data and makes the card usable to store data again.
Solution: Allow it to format.
Advice/ warning: Backup the data before you format.
