Why does my connection have such a high latency?

So I havent been able to play any online games since coming back from college (Where I was hooked up to ethernet getting GREAT speeds and next to zero ping) when I know the internet should be capable here. Im thinking, but I need you guys to help confirm, that its the USB WiFi dongle. It's a D-Link DWA130 N300 that I got several years ago now. The ping is in the hundreds in online games. If it is this, whats the most budget oriented thing I could replace it with that would give me a good ping and make online gaming a breeze?
Thanks everyone.

Wanted to let you know, I got this and my ping is WAY down. Online is now playable at 50 ping, where it was over 200 before.

It's in-home WiFi. I know that Ethernet is definitely preferred, but its not an option here. Most of my friends all play off of WiFi and none of them have the latency I do.

if your issue is a weak wifi signal then you can pay for a router with external antennas , other than that the only option is to extend your lan with a lan cable or an ethernet over power solution .. nothing else comes to my mind , english is not my native language i couldn't read your entire post

ah , sorry mate , i read your post again and i realized what mistake i made reading it the first time , i thought you had a router with a 3g or 4g dongle , now i realize it's a wifi dongle that explains it all , zyxel produces some cheap solutions for you with three external antennas , that's the only american company i know , netgear must be cheap aswell , all you need is a new router

No worries.
I thought that was it too, so we got a new TP-Link Archer Router with 3 antennas. Didn't help. I get a strong signal, even in my basement, but like I said the ping is crazy. I'm thinking I need to switch from a USB WiFi dongle to a PCI-E WiFi card. What do you think? That would reduce latency, no?

well certainly , if you already have a router like that , and if you acquire a pci express card with 2 or 3 antennas to have on the other end , then it must be fine , i haven't tried those ethernet over power networks so i don't know if they have an impact on the ping too

but seems to me like in america most people who are into gaming install a lan network at their homes , like to connect the main tv via steam or so , so i thought there might be companies who can install a lan network for you so you can connect hardwired

i'm glad your doing well , i myself haven't experienced great pings since i left north america :( a couple of days ago i had pings of about 48 milliseconds but i think they were overhauling their systems cause the next day it was back to the standard 110 :((
