why does my htc phone keep asking for an sd card after 2 years?!!

I have had an htc phone for nearly 2 years and it has just started asking for an sd card and I can't view any of my photos which is more worrying as I have over 200 on phone

1. The phone (or SD card) is not the place for long term, only copy, of pictures.

2. Maybe the internal memory is full.
