So i bought the HP envy 15.6" corei7 with 16GB DDR3L SDRAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M switchable Graphics. I thought this would be enough power to run Tear enmasse on full settings as Tera only requires about 4GB ram to run with a minimum graphics of AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ or, INTEL Core2 Duo E6750. Ten minutes into the game the fan gets really loud and the top right corner of the laptop gets REALLY hot. I think maybe a laptop cooler will do the trick but I'm wondering if upgrading to SSD will have any impact on the heating? Bare with me I'm a nub and open to suggestions :)

Solution
The laptop cooler will definitely help cool components inside, as the fans will blow air into the case. I would recommend a dual-fan cooler, and not one with a single fan in the center if you're noticing heat on the right side.
that area is where the graphics card is at and why its getting hot there. while playing games it uses the gt 740m card and it will start to produce heat causing the fan to kick on to help cool it. during everyday activities it will use the build in intel hd graphics.

RAM amount has nothing to do with heat generated at all. What is getting hot is either your CPU and/or GPU. Laptops are notorious for getting hot, especially if you have anything restricting the airflow. The HDD will get a little warm, but upgrading to an SSD won't do anything about your heat.

Download Piriform Speccy (http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download) and run that while playing and see what temps you're getting.

Just wanted to know if there is any available upgrade to prevent it heating up so much, and also if SSD would be more beneficial than 5400 RPM

You think the best bet would be to get a laptop cooler which would help the airflow? Possibly the cheapest alternative than getting a better Graphics card
