I played Fallout 3, and even with the one game patch available and the windows game platform patch from Windows, it still locked-up frequently. I learned to save often. I never found a work-around. It could be annoying because it depended on the location I was at, as well as if I had successfully moved through the area before or not. Not much help, but good luck anyway.

Well, thanks for the good wishes anyway :D
The thing is that it freezes couple of minutes after the player is born, so it doesnt really helps to just save and restart the game when the bad thing happens...
Could it be a compatibility isue?

Do you have a quad core CPU, or a dual core CPU with hyperthreading? If so, Fallout 3 has issues with CPUs that are seen to have more than 2 cores. There is a workaround for this. You have to open your Fallout.ini file, located in C:\My Documents\My Games\Fallout 3 look for the following lines and change them to the values I indicate:
bUseThreadedAI=0
iNumHWThreads=2

Save the file and exit notepad. That should fix the freezing issues.

Fallout 3 is a great game... when it doesn't crash.

Fortunately, I never really had too many issues with it. If you are running Fallout 3 on a Win 7 OS, then you may have some more issues since Win 7 is not officially supported.

I basically had no issues with the game using Win XP except for the occasional crash. However, with Win 7 Fallout 3 crashes too often. As mentioned by Supernova1138 inserting the following lines did fix my issues a while ago.

bUseThreadedAI=0
iNumHWThreads=2

Note, that I only have the vanilla game installed with some mods on my laptop (with Win 7). I haven't installed any of the DLCs yet and I don't recall which patch I am currently using. The general rule is not to install a newer patch unless you are experiencing problems or if it adds more contents, or it is required to play one of the DLCs.

The multi core thing isn't true - I have a quad core and Fallout 3 runs fine on it.
The game is actually optimised for multi cores, as it says on the box.

Depends on the system.

On desktop rig with a Core 2 Quad Q9450 I had no issues whatsoever except for the occasional crash.
My laptop has a Core i5-2410m (dual core + Hyper Threading) the game would constantly freeze until I edited the ini file.
Don't know about a quad core i5-2300, i5-2400, i5-2500, i5-2500k, or i5-2550k CPU since I don't own one. None of those CPUs has Hyper Threading.
