[citation][nom]ChaohsiangChen[/nom]After all, you call me "Windows loving mouth half-cocked with no ammo," and I just unleashed half of what you deserve. Feel bad now? So you think you can call other people name and shouldn't be called back? Also, I still don't believe anything you say. You claim to be working in IT but I failed to see you talk like one, or even knowledgeable to be one. You claim to know something about computer system of banks but refuse further query and hide behind confidentiality, even behind anonymity. You smell very fishy to me. You failed to recognize and admit that even Mac users have technical difficulty and troubles just like Windows users, and also you failed to see I am actually a command prompt lover. All us Apple-haters trying to convey is that Apple treats consumers like suckers. That's true with their pricing policy. All we Apple-haters trying to say is that Apple didn't deliver a product so much better than Microsoft, Redhat and Unbuntu have to offer. Better human interface, maybe, but not in terms of versatility, flexibility, consumer choice, security, stability, after market support and tinkerability. Also we can't stand the smog of the kind of Mac users who claim as if using a mac is reminiscent to some kind of spiritual enlightenment. Which part of all of above can't you understand, and which part can you refute? None![/citation]

I will never feel bad for speaking the truth. And I never refused your query. I just won't tell you details.

I don't need your validation to exist. I know mac users have problems, and if you READ what I wrote you would know that. For you to flip-flop and dodge my true questions shows me you know even less. So that's where the "windows loving half cocked" statement came from. It's not simply name calling. Moron. That's name calling.
Like I said, anyone can google commands, and I saw it and recognized it.
Btw how would running that print command work if the system blue screened? What were you planning to type it on? Oh I know... You happened to have a second linux machine hidden in the background that could bypass the windows lockup and somehow send the document (on the locked up machine mind you) to the printer? And when that printer doesn't support pdf printing then what? It's great that you know simple commands, I'm proud of you.
Oh wait even better... You somehow fixed the code while the system was locked up, and got a copy of Putty running, and then sent the document through your hidden linux machine... Even though all you're doing is converting a file to a pdf and printing it as a text file.

I don't need to justify anything to you. I went there to prove yet another point. You apple-haters only hate that something else is stealing the limelight from your precious gaming rigs, and your wonderfully intelligent command line interfaces. And to even mention that Apple stole? And you're talking about the operating system that is a total rip off from IBM, xerox and every other company? Nice.

But with your next comment, this being my last waste of time, just remember no matter what you say, 10% market share is just around the corner.

You made me LMAO.

[citation][nom]djwojo13[/nom]And when that printer doesn't support pdf printing then what? [/citation]

This is proof of a lier. Anybody with some basic knowledge of linux knows that:

1. All supported printers under linux can receive Postscript format. If the hardware doesn't support, then the driver will just convert postscript into something the printer can read. This is a none-issue with all "newer" printers after 2000.

2. pdf2ps converts pdf files into postscript stream.

And, no, if Windows somehow fails to print and give me BSOD, which is very unlikely, since printer spool does not have that kind of memory access authorization to crash Windows, generally, I'll just reboot it into linux in textmode and type the command. LILO and GRUB don't exist without a reason.

Your claim doesn't back up your knowledge showed here, no wonder to run away in order to stop embarrassing yourself.

The prices macs go for? I mean come on. The average enthusiast usually doesn't have money falling out of their arse. I hand built an E8400 based system with a DFI x38 board, 2 Diamond 4870 in crossfire and 2GB of Patriot RAM 2.4v 4-4-4-9 at 927MHz (BTW these RAM stick rule!) I've got this baby at 3.5GHz right now with no voltage increase. The efficiency of a PC is immeasurable to a Mac. Plus I built and bought everything I needed without dropping even $1500. Plus any decent Apple desktops come with crappy graphics card and well, they're terrible to modify. You enjoy your macworld and I'll enjoy Crysis and COD4 on Maximum setting with all the eye candy turned on and ripping and encoding enormous files in seconds.

So I'm a "lier" because you're trying to run linux commands on windows to fix a blue screen dll error? I never said i was a linux admin crazy chen. I also never told you what printer model? All this proves is you are an a$$ that can't ever be wrong because you happen to know linux. What if you're on a secure network and have zero access to reboot into anything other then what your domain account allows? I told you there was a DLL error, ON WINDOWS, and it blue screened so you couldn't print.

Keep arguing your non existent point.

I am not embarrassed at all. Keep trying to pump that tiny ego of yours up to full size so you can get the last word in.

[citation][nom]djwojo13[/nom]I've been a system admin, networking specialist, data center tech, and the list goes on. ALL on PC's and windows/*nix/solaris servers/workstations. [/citation]

Yes you did, liar. Thanks for spelling check BTW.

Arguing on the internet is like the special olympics... No matter who wins they are still a f**king retard.

[citation][nom]Quietobserver[/nom]Arguing on the internet is like the special olympics... No matter who wins they are still a f**king retard.[/citation]

HAHAHA I love that quote. You're right.

I refuse to use Apple hardware/OS due to one reason, and one reason only. They are the king of vendor lock-in. Yes, they even make Microsoft look "open". Consider what will happen when the day comes (if it ever comes) that Apple owns the majority of the market, and they decide that they want to double their prices. Oooh, ouch. Nobody can anything about it because you must purchase directly from Apple. There are no competitors from within their domain to keep them honest. With Microsoft, they gauge you on their software prices because they own the majority of the market and can get away with it. Could you imagine if you also had to purchase your hardware from Microsoft? Apple's business model will spell disaster for consumers if they ever sit on top. Why would you ever decide to lock yourself into that?

I did a similar shift to using a mac. I think the 'It just works' slogan is genius, only because it is patently not true - but I still enjoy using my mac more than XP or Ubuntu. Using Safari as an example, it crashes more often than any other browser I've ever used. The worst thing about Macs though is their SMB/CIFS compatibility. Copying large files across a wireless Windows network is as tortuous as water boarding.

I guess the reason why Apple can get away with "It just works" is that by comparison Vista seems like you've downgraded your hardware, and there are small basic things that are just mind numbingly bad. The best example I can give is when trying to assist users connecting their wireless vista laptops to their home adsl networks. Firstly, it seems that to get the laptop onto some wireless networks I needed to disable the security on the network join the laptop and then re-enable the security. Secondly the Vista laptops failed to get a correct DHCP lease from the adsl router, until I finally found some knowledgebase page that showed me what registry settings to change.

My issue with the whole Mac platform is not it's stability, features, or any of that. It's the fact that I have to shell out serious cash for parts that are significantly cheaper if I went with a Windows or Linux based PC. While their closed-system is great, because it enables them to get through the problems that Windows has, it doesn't leave many choices for the consumer, especially the consumer educated in the field.

This bothers me greatly, because I would love to try OS X, but as it stands right now, I have no need to. I write papers, listen to music, watch movies, and play games perfectly fine on my Windows Vista, custom-built PC. Until OS X enables me to use hardware that I want to use, instead of it's overpriced hardware, I won't be making the switch.

There's one other problem I have with the Mac, and the whole Apple thing in general. It's fans. Not all of them (great example is the article creator), but certainly a good portion of them are these hipster, gentrification-creating, rich kids who think they are cool because they wear girl pants and think they are "deep" because they write poems.

Zzzzz . . . mac good.

Ummm . . . pc not so good.

Yawn! (turns over)

Why write these insipid articles at all?

I love people who comment but have no first hand knowledge, or usually very limited hands on experience. There's no need for a Chevy vs. Ford vs. Toyota comparison in this industry. This industry started as a hobby, Z80, 6502, etc. Any computer was cool. Calling it a "Toy", something that has contributed to the digitization of the print/publishing industry, audio industry, and hollywood, and now ease of use and less troubleshooting hassles then Windows in a home environment. You're as bad as the rabid Mac fanatics that are as clueless about Windows. To each his own. Instead of insulting, maybe delve a little deeper and give it a chance. Neither platform is perfect, and never will be. These are tools with their own pros and cons. Grow up and buy a clue!

Mega Dittoes on the Mac. I bought a MacBook a couple of months ago just to do iPhone development with Xcode. I have a "hoss" of a gaming PC running XP. Now I can hardly stand to go back to the PC and the MacBook which was going to be my iPhone development machine has become my main squeeze.

I'll run XP as long as Microsoft will let me but sooner or later, they'll stop answering the "you've changed your hardware - phone home" calls and XP will cease to function. That's another thing I like about Mac OSX. You can wipe and reinstall as many times as you want on your Mac Hardware and you don't have to worry about exceeding anyone's counters.

So true! When they sued Microsoft an lost, it wasn't that MS allegedly "copied" the mouse or their OS -- they claimed that MS infringed on their patents for a GUI! If Apple had gotten their way, they would make sure that only Apple could have an OS with a GUI! If they ran things (market share wise) we'd all be f*cked! They already completely monopolize their hardware and software; imagine if they had 90% market share! Just look at what happened to that company in FL that wanted to make Mac compatible computers...they got shot down so quick it's not even funny! They won't even anyone use their software unless you buy it from them!

What upsets people about Mac-Nazis, is that they have this blind allegiance to Apple and fail to see things as they really are. Sure there are also Windows-Facistas, but not in the same proportions; to your average windows, it's just a pc...but to your average mac user, it's a gift from the gods!

I've used both (though Mac not as much) & have say that there are good & bad things for both. For the most part (on average):

Versatility: PC
Backwards Compatibility: PC
Aesthetics: Mac
Reliability: PC & Mac
Learning Curve: Mac
Upgradeable: PC
Cost: PC
Security: Mac
And on, and on, and on...

[citation][nom]djwojo13[/nom]Which proves you can't read. System admin. I said I used windows/*nix/Solaris hardware. I can go all night![/citation]

Why are trying to run away so fast? Among all the retarded entertainment, ratting out liars is my favorite, so much better than watching 24 on Fox.

When is Linux not in *nix family? And pdf2ps can also be found on any Solaris, AIX, FreeBSD and some other *nix I can't think of, even on OS X. Any system admin knows what lpr stands for, and any admin's first primary job includes providing printer service to end users. You showed that you have no knowledge about lpr, and you have no knowledge, expertise to be an admin. Liar.

Admins: It's time to lock out this thread
Nothing constuctive is coming from the last couple pages of posts, it is just one personal attack after another. Sorry to ruin your 'fun' ChaosiangChen but this kind of attack should be reserved for lesser forums, not Tom's.

You're an idiot ChaohsiangChen. One of the biggest idiots I have ever seen writing on a comments forum. I think arguing is retarded, but the guy/girl proved themself over and over and over, and you refuse to read what he/she says. Your small focused mind just keeps locking on mishaps you are finding by picking out one part of the sentence, and HAMMERING ON IT. You've shown everyone reading these comments that you are nothing but a one track minded simpleton who THINKS he has all this knowledge. I believe YOU are the LIAR.

And to invalidate your final comment for good, System Admin can mean ANYTHING. He/she clarified and said hardware. You still can't get past it can you? And he/she DID know what lpr stood for. You are such a dumba$$. I bet you he/she is laughing all the way to the bank right now while you enjoy your civic in a nice new trailer home. Give it a rest. You lost.

"Any system admin knows what lpr stands for, and any admin's first primary job includes providing printer service to end users."

What kind of low level Help Desk Admin are you Chen? Printing service primary? Who do you work for, some tiny toy store with 50 employees? So you read a book and think you know what enterprise level administration is? True system admins have help desks screening their calls/emails and level 1 takes care of the minor issues like your so amazing self-taught linux skills can handle. Sounds like you are the one knowing nothing.

Try the primary job being keeping a production environment up and running. They said they work at a global bank. Are you blind? They probably haven't touched a printer command in 10 years! And they called you out and you still don't believe them? Well I'm calling you out, LIAR! Go back to your trashy reality shows, and study up on your guru printer skills. I'll be on my mac looking up what game to buy on my consoles because PC gaming is dead.

"Any system admin knows what lpr stands for, and any admin's first primary job includes providing printer service to end users."

You don't know anything man. What system admin wastes their time on a printer issue? They are too busy keeping servers up and applying patches for that crap. Get a life.

GREAT POSTS! Finally people getting down to the root of it all.

[citation][nom]IndigoMoss[/nom]There's one other problem I have with the Mac, and the whole Apple thing in general. It's fans. Even as a mac guy - I couldn't agree with you more! And i literally laughed on that one because I see them everyday.

Very, Very good point. People go nuts over the image that it has now. "OOooooH it;s shiny and silver and matches my shoes!" Like it's some kind of fashion accessory.

[citation][nom]Stoner-T[/nom]You're as bad as the rabid Mac fanatics that are as clueless about Windows. To each his own. Instead of insulting, maybe delve a little deeper and give it a chance. Hey, the point of the article and you nailed it on the head. That's one of the main reasons I ran a mac/PC at the same time. Now it's just easier for me to throw on VM-Fusion and run windows in Unity mode when I need a windows app.

[citation][nom]Merlot_pv[/nom]The worst thing about Macs though is their SMB/CIFS compatibility. Ah ha.... Finally one of the networking examples I've been waiting for. A lot of people addressed the SMB/CIFS issues when browsing, but I don't know that 10.5.4 truly "fixed" everything yet. Looks a lot better though, personally I haven't had too many issues. As for the vista comments, I'm glad I never got a laptop with a copy yet. That sounds like a nightmare. I'll stick to XP - like stated above - until they stop supporting it.

Looks like intelligence finally made it back to the comments section.

Seeing my name is enough to scare the liar. So no need to provide any more attack.

Module 12 - Configuring Printer Service

* Identify network printing fundamentals
* Configure printer services
* Administer printer services
* Start and stop the line printer (LP) print service

https://www.suntrainingcatalogue.com/eduserv/client/loadCourse.do?coId=hu_HU_SA-200-S10&coCourseCode=SA-200-S10&l=hu_HU

Objective
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

* Manage file systems
* Perform system boot procedures
* Perform user and security administration
* Manage network printers and system processes
* Perform system backups and restores

=======================================================
Why printer service is put AFTER performing system security course? Why printer service is put before system backup? Because printers are essential to productivity environment. I rest my case.

Alright enough of this.

What ever Personal Computer the end user uses does not matter.

With more and more cross platform applications. The system makes less difference.

The point was missed(the reason for the article). OS X has made improvements. I do not see my self switching any time soon, but the author can have whatever they want.

You use,

Windows? Great!

Solaris? Great! It works very well in a business environment

Linux? Great!

Mac OS X? Great!

A Mac with Windows and OS X? Sure why the hell not!

The fanboy stuff has no real place.

Lock er up admins

"The good part of all this is that many of the major publishers are starting to really both Windows and Mac versions of games at the same time."

Can anyone explain this to me? IF I read through the badly written sentence, I'm to understand that "publishers" such as EA, Eidos, Blizzard, 2k and all are actually making games for Macs too?? Where on heaven's name did this come out from?!

Also, comparing OS X to Windows XP? Seriously? Did you EVEN TRY Windows VISTA? As a 100% Vista Ultimate x64 and FORMER OS X user, I have to say I pretty much like what Vista does... a lot. Windows management?? GAWD. Ok. You have a task bar... and... you can... click in any windows, and if that program has multiple windows, you'll get shown what those windows are. No need to click on the friggin Dash board + Fn key to get options and see what's there.

Loser.
