Why is Linux Mint slow in gaming?

I installed Linux Mint and I also installed my graphics drivers, it helped with performance but I still get only 50 fps. (Couple hundred in Windows). Do I have to install something else?

I tried Ubuntu, but I couldn't even install my graphics drivers.

CPU: Intel Core i5
GPU: Sapphire AMD R9 290 4GB
RAM: 8GB

Most Linux drivers are not official, they are reverse engineered by volunteers to work so gaming on Linux will always be less optimal than Windows. I wont expect this to change anytime soon, the Steam OS still isn't building enough attention for AMD and Nvidia to create proper Drivers for Linux, this is why most people Dual boot and game in Windows. Drivers are also months behind when compared to Windows versions, it takes time to get things stable when your dealing with people that do what they do for free.

If you really want to game on linux machine then your best bet is using nvidia cards.
