Question Why is my GTX 1060 3GB performing well below expectations ?

Hello, I've been having an issue with my GPU (Gtx 1060 3gb) for quite some time now. I had previously checked to see if everything was alright, but I left it thinking that maybe I just had a GPU that was too underpowered for my needs.

I ran a userbenchmark test with everything closed:

https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/63086978

It turns out that my GPU is performing well below expectations.

I tried using it on a relatively demanding game with FPS locked at 65 (which I never reach, maybe around 63, unlocked FPS i get around 90-140 FPS but still 99% FPS drops to 7 sometimes). I noticed that the 99% FPS hovers around 20 on average, but it keeps between 4-5 and 25, making the game practically unplayable. Even with 60-55 FPS it drops to 7-99% FPS..

Even when locked at 65 fps:

The CPU usage is around 70%, while the GPU usage ranges from 45% to 65%.

The GPU temperature stays at about 70°C, the wattage at around 70, and sometimes it drops below 50W, with voltage between 1-1.1.

My CPU is a i3-8100, Ram 16 GB 3200 MHZ, and i use an SSD for the OS, HDD to play videogames.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

userbenchmark shows that your GPU runs fine
you have monitoring OSD running? (msi afterburner) look for vram utilisation and storage utilisation durring those frame drops
Hi, thank you!

The VRAM is still at 2330, how can i check the storage utilisation?

I saw that sometimes the cpu clock drops to 800 mhz, i've increased the FPS limit to 80, gpu utilisation is between 30% and 50%, every cpu core is 60%-80% average

Many consider userbenchmark as junk science.

My thought is that your i3-8100 is not sufficiently strong enough to drive your games fast enough to increase the fps.
Do not be fooled into thinking you have cpu headroom at 70%.
It might be all from one core.
As a simple test,
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

For all this time.. i've tested it, and it is as you said.

The CPU usage is perm 100% and the GPU is locked to 70% at max.

I've tried to decrease the resolution to the lowest, i got the same FPS at max. (actually +5 fps)

So the problem is CPU side..

Without doing calculations (which I don't know how to do), I believe that my GPU has been limited to 3/4 of its power all this time...

Also, i've seen that in Single Player i get around 220 FPS with consistent 120 99% FPS (which i didn't expect), in Multiplayer it struggles to go around 140, with inconsistent 99% FPS.

All the lobbies are hosted by a random player, and since there are few Europeans, it's hard to find a lobby with a good ping (average 200 ms).

The game is perfectly playable in sp.

Is there any fix to solve this type of problems?

What is the make/model of your motherboard?
Your strongest likely drop in cpu replacement might be a I7-9700K.
The extra threads would be most helpful for multiplayer.
They sell for about $150 on ebay. And, you likely would need a cpu cooler also.

Perhaps it is time to consider current gen.
For example, the i3-13100 processor is stronger and costs less.
Yes, you would need a new mobo , the ddr4 ram can be reused.

Im using a Gigabyte Z370P D3,

What if i switch to an AMD, mobo + cpu combo is far cheaper, i've found an i3 13100F at 100€ but the mobo is 200€ at min.. with amd i can spend 200€ and have a both

Exactly what part numbers are you looking at for cpu, mobo, ram?
Price/performance should be comparable for either Intel or AMD.
AMD may be better for mulithreaded batch apps, and intel for gaming.
Is there a web site that you use for shopping?

Well, then i should go for intel.

There's only a mobo at 130€ but it is a b760: ASUS PRIME B760-PLUS D4

the ram should be enough, no? 3200 mhz
