Why is my HDD faster than my SSD?

I have a Samsung EVO, and when running app timer (https://www.passmark.com/products/apptimer.htm) ,

the HDD is about 10-15% faster, the test I use is restarting Google chrome repeatedly.

This test is done on same machine, desktop i5-8400.

The HDD gets about .3 seconds, and SSD gets about .35 on average...

SSD is Samsung EVO (about 2 years old) and HDD is brand new HGST that comes stock with Acer Aspire laptop.

Any idea what is going on? Is my SSD toast?


Any better test to gauge the speed, but for me, opening programs faster = faster real speed...right?

That benchmark basically is for measuring cache speed of the drive.

If you want to measure drive performance, use something more appropriate.
AS SSD benchmark for example.

Thanks , will do. But this is only for SSD, how can I test both and compare?

Also, I would like to add that the SSD has never been de-fragmented, but the HDD is brand new, would reformatting the SSD make it as fast as the HDD?

Just run the test. It will show you how much there is difference between HDD and SSD.

No - you don't need to defragment SSD. Your SSD already is much faster than HDD.
You may need to update firmware of SSD though.

Did the test, Samsung SSD seems to be running fine:

However, I did an additional test between both drives, loading 10 facebook tabs simultaneously, using chrome page load time plugin, now the HDD REALLY kicked the ass of the SSD, the SSD sometimes 6 times slower per tab...

What is going on here? .... Really confused!

SSD is faster when you COPY FILES. Opening Facebook tabs USES YOUR RAM. SSDs use more RAM than HDDs. HDDs will be slower if you COPY FILES to it.
