I recently bought an msi gtx 1080 gaming x. on msi website its showing that in the OC mode it runs at 147Mhz boost clock and in gaming mode at 1822 boost clock. So my question is, why is my gtx 1080 which is in gaming mode running so much higher at 1974MHz max? When i was using my msi gtx 970 it was running exactly as advertised but my 1080 runs higher and i did not perform any overclocking myself.

Solution
because of GPU Boost 3.0.
It will automatically boost your max clock speeds if the temperature and voltage allow so. that is why overclocking is not that necessary with this generation of cards.

some chips will be able to get a higher clock, some less. that is why MSI and other companies advertise a clock speed that GPUs will get 100% all the time. but the majority will boost higher.

that's how nvidia gpu boost work. they often boost exceeding the value mention by manufacturer as long as the conditioned allowed it. and i think nvidia strictly tell board partner not to put the highest peak frequency in their official spec to avoid marketing issue.
