Question Why is my WIN10-64 Pro so slow?

I have an older HP Compaq 6000 Pro MT. Yes, it is a few (lol) years old, but still works great, if it would just not be slow at times...

My config:
- WIN10-64 Pro
- 2 TB HDD (WIN on it), 1.3 TB free space on it
- 750 GB 2nd HDD (totally empty right now)
- 1 CD-ROM (PC does not recognize second one, different thread)
- Max of 16GB RAM 1333MHz (BIOS and CPU-Z show 399 MHz / 800 MHz, different thread)
- 512GB Nvidia Quadro FX580 GPU (looking for a 2GB, 4GB or even 8GB faster card in the near future)
- Standard 355W Power Supply (might need a new one with a better GPU, Compaq has a sep issue there with different connectors, ugh)
- Internet via Ethernet (not connected via WiFi)
- WiFi connection to the printer, though

I ran all kinds of tests. Per WIN no need for defrag of the HDDs. I did a defrag of the Registration, did check the Reg for mistakes and missing things, virus and malware checks all negative, all tests done got issues at all...

I just added the 16GB RAM (from 8GB before) and the lagginess is a bit better. But some webpages take ages to load and the PC itself (Word, Explorer, even opening up the calculator or a music player, etc) is slow at times.
I will eventually add a 1TB of SDD and move the whole WIN to the SDD (using the HDD as backup and to save pics and music), making it (hopefully) faster, but that is somewhat in the near future.

So what and where is the bottle neck?
Any suggestions what I could do to make it faster and less laggy?

THANK YOU!!!

Couple of different things,

Check temperatures, the CPU could be getting hot, may need new paste, or a good dusting, heck make sure the fan still spins, it is an older system and idk if you ever had it opened up before let alone recently to dust it from time to time.

GPU, also check the temps of that as well, Can use free programs such as HWmonitor, many other out there that will work as well. https://www.cpuid.com/downloads/hwmonitor/hwmonitor_1.54.exe

Slow downs in every day use, from booting your PC up, to opening things like a web browser, or a program is mostly going to be held back by the HDD, HDD's are vary slow, and as they age, they tend to get slower, but an over heating CPU can sorta have the same symptoms.

I would suggest getting an SSD and installing windows on it, don't need a big one or an expensive one to make it feel ever faster than it was new, you can still keep the 2TB HDD in the PC for over flow files or programs.

Another thing, the CPU, I'm sure it has a Core 2 Duo, or a Core 2 Quad, they are starting to show their age, so some modern tasks may not be the fastest on it, Core 2 Duo may even be taxed out often being only a dual core.

That system is pretty old, more than few lol, if you are still happy with it, no need to upgrade it, but will have to expect things wont run as fast as they use to epically when software updates or even the OS, Updated Windows 10 is kinda heavy on older CPU's like the Core 2 Duo's these days, But might be better off looking for a faster system, can get some pretty speedy systems for reasonable prices that would run circles around that system.

Good Luck!

Thanks for getting back to me, really appreciate it!

My Fan is working fine, I just tried in the BIOS to manipulate it and change the minimum speed, it worked perfect.

My PC is elevated and not dusty/dirty beyond "normal", plus I just cleaned it out, the little bit of dust it had. No spiderwebs or thick layers of dust.

I thought about a 500GB or so SSD, just a small one to have WIN on it to start and run basics... All data, music, videos and all can be on the 2TB/750GB HDDs...

So you say that even when I look at webpages, do some basic stuff on PC it always goes back to the HDD?

Could a better newer Power Supply with more Wattage be helpful? I doubt it as the wattage has nothing to do with speed, but just with what I can feed with it, like I cannot have 6 HDDs and 4 additional PCIe cards and a 8GB Graphic Card all at the same time and still use the old standard 355W Power Supply... Or would a newer PSU with more wattage help?

MY CPU has a liquid cooler with a separate fan, is not dusty at all. Currently at 47 degree Celcius, per hp.com up to 80 degrees is acceptable, under 60 is ideal for light workloads. So mine is not overheating at all.

My CPU is a Intel Pentium E5700 Wolfdale 65W with a Dual Core @ 3.00GHz. Current core speed is 2393.86 MHz with Bus speed of 199.49 MHz and rated FSB of 797.95 MHz (some of it I have no clue what it means, but you were right with the Dual Core). All that data is from CPU-Z.

So basically, everything within normal working parameters, but just old? Do I take that right? So either a new SSD to make things faster on that side or tabula rasa and a brand new PC altogether...

Thanks so much for the time you took to explain and try to figure it out!

Why is your system slow?

Because it is an old, slow, underpowered system.

No SSD.
What CPU?
lol, yeah I know, it is old and slow, but it seems to get slower and slower...

An SSD will make things open faster, wont really be any benefit from going to web page to web page, but opening the browser from the first time the PC boots up, there will be a pretty noticeable difference, heck a basic run of the mill sata SSD will make the entire system just feel faster despite the age, I got a PC in my garage with a old Core 2 Quad Q6600 with DDR2 memory, It's only a few seconds slower at boot up than my modern AMD Ryzen system with a NVME SSD in it. I definitely recommend one even for older systems, Its the response times that make the big difference,

I have a old OCZ SSD, read and reads & writes are actually slower than a HDD, but it feels faster than a HDD because it can get that file way faster than any HDD can, Doesn't have to spin up or anything, its just there, instantly.

PSU wouldn't do nothing for speed, but it can help if you plan to upgrade and need more connectors or a video card needs more power than what your current PSU can output. But then again, going that route, upgrading the PSU (Would not cheap out to much on a PSU, it can take the entire system with it if it fails), and video card, or even CPU, most Core 2 Quads would work with that board, I'd just get a newer system, can find far more capable systems for under $100 on marketplace or ebay, Heck I just sold a Ryzen 1600 system, all it needed was a GPU for $100.

Of course thats my opinion on it, I don't personally deal with LGA775 systems much anymore with customers, sorta got phased out with age.

Good Luck, We are always here if need help!

Amazing support!!!

Yes, I do not want to spend too much money on upgrading something that I could replace with just a few more bucks... So I will consider to replace it completely with a whole new (refurbished?) system that runs faster from the getgo. That's a project for later in 2025 when WIN10 won't get any more support anyway. Not that I want WIN11 but if that's what they offer, well then that's what they offer...

Thank you again for all your help, I know you don't have to do that and time is valuable. Thank you.
