This is more a question out of curiosity, but why the heck are monitors so expensive? Many monitors are at $200+ for a decent size and resolution, which is pretty close to about half of the cost of my system. All responses are accepted.

50%, 40%...no difference.

For any product, there is a LOT more than just the sum price of the subassemblies.
For a monitor or TV, the screen is by far the most expensive single part.

19" monitor, 39" monitor...either can be driven by the same electronics.
But it is much more expensive to cast a flawless 39" vs a flawless 19".

For a PC that is $400(?), you don't need a $200 monitor.

21.5" $90

24" $105

24" $130

Oh, you want 4k? Well, that is more money.
But you can't drive 4k from a $400 PC.

This isn't about monitor companies profiteering or ripping you off. You are letting your inner disillusion conspiracy card show.

Don't want a nice screen? No requirement that you get one.

Do you want eyestrain and headaches? Do you want a tiny little screen of a low resolution? Do you not care about response times/latency? Plenty of cheap monitors to be had.

$65 bucks.

You get what you pay for. Everyone sells monitors up and down the price points and they compete fiercely on price.

But stop and think for a second. What is the one thing you spend all your time staring at? What is the only way you have of seeing what the PC is doing? The monitor. Going nasty on the monitor is short sighted as it leads to a pretty awful user experience.

It amazes me that people will complain about a $100 monitor they HAVE to look at, but will buy a $150 case that sits under their desk. As shown above, cheap TN panel monitors are ~$100. Unless you are doing something "crazy" that's all you really need. You can buy a curved higher res IPS, etc monitor for more, but that's not really needed. With a $400 computer those cheap $100 TN panels is all you really need. Stick with 1080 60Hz as that PC you have isn't going to handle 4K, 144Hz, etc.

I guess I wasn’t clear. I’m wondering in terms of internal technologies what...I guess sub-components, are involved in making a monitor. I can probably do the rest. Oh, and my system is about $550. Apologies for the “$200 being half the cost of my system” statement.
