Why my 1080 ti doesn't pass the Steam VR benchmark test?

I upgraded my system by adding a Zotac gtx 1080 ti founders edition and this is my current set up with the card.

I went to steam VR test and my system failed as it was "gpu bound." It said I would have to upgrade my "gpu" Last time I checked, a 1080 ti is the best gpu out as of right now. What is going on?!?

Again, I show 143FPS so you fail because it's locked to 60FPS (VSYNC is locked on somehow).

The test is probably looking to see you can get at least 90FPS at all times for the best score as that's what they use in the RIFT/VIVE (60Hz would be insufficient to prevent nausea).

Yes, you're good aside from this glitch or accidental setting change somewhere.

*Note if you have a GLOBAL VSYNC option set then every game will be locked to 60FPS (60Hz monitor). There may be times you want VSYNC OFF. For example, maybe you play CSGO or some other shooter and then drop to 1920x1080 to get 200FPS+.

(Your monitor may only update fully every 60x per second, however there are benefits to an unlocked frame rate. You get PARTIAL screen updates which...

1) Have you confirmed the PERFORMANCE of your system in other games or benchmarks?

2) Is your monitor attached to the GTX1080Ti, and not some other card or the motherboard?

3) Sometimes you can run DDU (recommended SAFE MODE option) to remove drivers. Then reinstall the NVidia drivers.

OTHER:
I'll go look at the Steam VR test thingy, as well as find my own benchmarks for Unigine Valley so you can compare.

UPDATE:
SteamVR Performance Test will take me an HOUR or so to download so I'll post results below.

UNIGINE VALLEY.. I only have a GTX1080, and slightly better CPU but the CPU shouldn't affect the results so at the SAME EXACT SETTINGS you should get about 25% higher performance (closer to 35% probably for a test like this at 4K but I didn't test 4K).

I left in my GTX680 results, and BTW the FREQUENCY in the upper-right in Unigine Valley is always incorrect for me.

Unigine Valley
SETTINGS: DX11, Ultra, x8AA, full screen, 2560x1440

GTX680
- 27.5FPS avg
- 1152
- 16.3FPS low
- 51.9FPS high

GTX1080
- 68.4FPS avg
- 2863
- 32.7fps low
- 140.3fps high

*I would guess about 86FPS average is what you should get for the EXACT settings listed above. (other values don't really matter)

Steam VR Performance Test (results):

I pressed PLAY, and it just launches a small window that represents both eyes. Some PORTAL character does stuff and in the lower-left of the window it showed "143FPS" (though you probably need the FPS indicator turned on in the Steam settings to see that).

I would assume if you show the FPS you'd get at least 170FPS (20% higher only as may not scale as much for lower resolution?).

*after a few minutes I just get shown these results:
- VERY HIGH
- Average quality 11

At the top the green arrow is furthest to the right of the red/yellow/green bar indicating how ready you are for VR.

My system:
GTX1080, 16GB, i7-3770K (OC to 4.4GHz)
W10 64-bit, and a coffee holder

My bad for not mentioning that the only gpu in my system is the 1080 ti and not my old gpu also as there would be a major bottleneck if I was stupid enough to do that. I have confirmed performance as I ran games like doom at 4k getting 60 fps as my 4k monitor can't go past 60fps. I ran valley benchmark as I already had that on my computer also. I tried to match your settings, here is the settings I ran at and the score.
settings:
Direct 11
2560x1440 8xAA Full Screen
Custom
Ultra

Score:
FPS-81.8
Score-3421
Min fps-32.1
Max fps-134.1

So that is how my system did as you can tell me if that is good or bad and why it said I would "fail" at Steam VR for some odd reason. My monitor is attached to the gpu and not my motherboard as that would be a rookie mistake as I made sure of that. The drivers are installed correctly as I know that for a fact. Thanks in advance btw for the help.

Well, you scored 20% higher than I did for Unigine Valley so your basic hardware and software is setup correctly. (I have a GTX1080 EVGA FTW with a slightly tuned further overclock so 20% sounds very close)

Basic games seem to work.

Must be some weird glitch. The ONLY advice I can think of is:

1. Reboot, then try again
2. verify program code (right-click, properties, local files, "verify integrity..")
3. if fails, use DDU as described above then reinstall NVidia drivers (and when reinstalling choose the custom-> clean install option to remove any missed settings)

OTHER: go into Steam, settings, in-game, then enable the FPS counter... when the benchmark runs see what it runs at. I though maybe it was FPS locked somehow (should be about 170FPS for the GTX1080Ti by my calculation since I get about 143FPS)

Ah, I just commented below but didn't see this. You've got VSYNC forced on somehow for the application. Not sure if you setup a GLOBAL VSYNC option in the NVidia Control Panel but you shouldn't have that. Make any changes manually on a per-game basis (program settings, not global settings if you need to further modify VSYNC, AA or some other setting).

You might consider DDU as discussed, or check the NVidia Control Panel-> manage 3D settings-> disable any added settings there.

*If it shows 60FPS still during the test, then go to NCP-> manage 3d settings-> program settings-> "add game" then add the "VR" title that shows up.

Then drop down to VSYNC and change that to OFF, then SAVE settings.

Sry about all this but I went to the nvida control panel and what do you mean by added settings? What needs to be on? It looks like g-sync is on and vr is at 1? Vertical sync is use the 3d application setting. What am i looking for?

(Your monitor may only update fully every 60x per second, however there are benefits to an unlocked frame rate. You get PARTIAL screen updates which reduces button-to-photon delay so the game is more responsive. If the FPS is high enough, and other factors, the SCREEN TEAR may be very difficult to notice as well so basically you get a more responsive game with minimal drawbacks)
