[SOLVED] Why my ethernet connection keeps dropping ?

Hi all! I've been having ethernet connection issues for the past two weeks now, usually it would drop for about 15-30 seconds when i'm in game (Rainbow Six Siege) till i get disconnected and kicked from the game.

I tried to play other games, such as Valorant, but the issue became much worse. I would have absolutely zero connection till Valorant kicks me and forces me to shut the game down, then my connection would be back.

This happens almost everyday, but today, as i was searching and downloading for the new windows update, my ethernet connection actually got dropped right after i clicked on install for the new windows update. I wasn't in a game or any app that required a huge amount of network (if im right, correct me if im not), which is why i'm turning to you guys for help on this as its getting really irritating when im losing ranked games left and right due to disconnects.

P.S. I think that it might be because of MSI Afterburner (im not sure if anyone else has had issues with this app as well). I installed AB to edit my fan curves as my gpu was sounding like a jet engine 24/7.

PC Specs:
Ryzen 5 3500x
Zotac 2060 6GB Twin Fan
MSI B450M Bazooka Max Wifi

Using a CAT7 ethernet cable, not sure if it being brandless has anything to do with the connection issues.

But i must say, it was working fine earlier on before MSI AB was installed. These happened maybe a month or so after installing MSI AB.

I do not know what afterburner does but if it has any silly network or gamer accelerator/QoS you want to uninstall that.

Your first test is to open a command windows and leave a constant ping run to your router IP. When you see problems in the game quickly tab over to this window and see if you are getting packet loss. It should be obvious if you are actually getting 15+ seconds. It only takes 2-3 seconds to disconnect most stuff.

If you see nothing here it is not likely a problem with your pc or router but it could still be a game problem that only appears to be a network issue. A simple ping command is generally not affected by any overclock settings.

The next test would be to instead ping the game server or some ip like 8.8.8.8. This is to see if maybe your internet itself is going down.

Do i ping my IP with 32 bytes of data or is there a specific number to it? Thanks!

I think the minimum is 68bytes. Just use the default it doesn't make much difference. The only reason to use longer tends to be to test MTU issues but any packet length will show packet loss.

Hello! I’ve tried your suggestion for a day now.

Somehow, when my cmd is on with the constant pinging of 32 bytes of data, i don’t experience any problems with my ethernet disconnecting.

Without the pinging, it still does.

Wonder what does this mean?

This does not make a lot of sense. If the connection were idle you could consider things like duplicate IP on the lan and ping would reduce that but really any traffic should do the same.

Yep it does not make any sense to me either.

Worked fine for awhile, just got disconnected mid-game again.

nope, it kept on pinging my ip.

These are really hard to find. It is going to be some bug either in the game.....many times it is a video driver or maybe the OS. Not sure what to recommend you try. Maybe the event monitor has some error in it. You do not have a actual network problem.

To be really sure you can run a ping to 8.8.8.8. This is just in case your actual internet connection is dropping.

after trying out different methods, i went to try the simplest method, which was to delete my motherboard ethernet drivers and reinstall them.

it worked, i feel dumb.
