[SOLVED] Why my hard drives not working with my LG 27UP850-W when using the regular USB ports?

I just found out that the two regular USB ports on my LG 27UP850-W are not working with hard drives (Toshiba Canvio 4TB), I expected it to work as a hub, since my Macbook is connected to the LG via the USB-C port... is it normal or am I doing something wrong?

"USB Type-C port allows 4K video display, data transfer and laptop/mobile device charging, all at the same time over a single cable."

"Using my 2019 Macbook Air, and the provided USB-C cable that comes with the monitor, I can connect to the screen, charge my Macbook (faster than my original apple charger as the monitor provide 96W), and use the monitor's loudspeaker (yes it has them integrated), and also use the 2 USB-3 ports to connect my mouse/keyboard and external hard drive. Everything with only one USB-C cable, that's really neat, and clean up my desk from wires!"

I think you would need to contact LG and ask them what they classify as Data transfer as its vague.

USB Type-C™ ports allow 4K display, data transfer and connected device charging (up to 96W), enabling support for your laptop all at the same time over a single cable.

I suspect, as you have found, that it doesn't include hdd , more likely its for USB drives if anything.

manuals says it works as usb hub, but it also mentions, that windows needs to be up to date, that kinda rules out macbook compatibility
but also it says It is recommended to use a USB hub or hard disk drive with power supplied.

Thanks for the answer and link.

I'm surprised though as I took this 2021 screen precisely because it has more power (96W Power Delivery) than the 2020 version (27UL850).

And the guy in Amazon comments is using it fine with his hard drive with a Mac. I doubt his hard drive is powered externally since he also says:

"Everything with only one USB-C cable, that's really neat, and clean up my desk from wires!"

Even the official trailer from LG features this:

There must be something I'm missing here, no? I hope this is not just for PCs or even better LG PCs lol that would really be false advertisement.

I mean the LG connects to the hard drive in the sense the blue light of my drive turns on, but my Mac can't see the drive as a drive just as when I connect directly to the Mac.

Is it maybe the USB-C cable provided by LG which is not good enough, and I shall use the latest Thunderbolt 4? https://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/CBLTB4C0.7M/

Oh well next time I want a proper display I guess I'll have to break the bank and buy the Apple XDR for 5k xD

Okay I just got an externally powered WD Drive (https://www.westerndigital.com/prod...drive-for-xbox-usb-3-2-hdd#WDBA5E0120HBK-NESN) and it's not working with the LG USB either.

When I connect my hard drive to my Mac or to a hub, it turns it on.

When I connect my hard drive to one of the two USB ports, it doesn't do anything.

Shame on LG for still not making proper technology in 2021 :)

I doubt the cable has anything to with it, since the monitor itself should wake the hard drive as soon as it's connected to the monitor (regardless of computer attached to the screen), correct?

UPDATE: well actually it made me think > I tried to connect my iPhone with regular USB on the regular USB cable and it doesn't even work! Wow that's a shame.

So LG screens have regular USB just for show? Or is there a secret function that I'm missing to turn on the USB ports??
