Why? RADEON 8500

I'm using an ATI RADEON 8500DV graphics card with a NEC FP1375X monitor. I want to do 1920X1440, but when I select that setting the screen just grows beyond the edge of the monitor. You can use the mouse to slide the screen around. Who would want to use a desktop like this?

Is there a way of using this monitor to do native 1920X1440?

When it grows Beyong the edge of the Monitor, You Play with the Horizontal and Vertical settings on the Monitor to get it back to size.
