Question Why won't the SSD show up anywhere in Windows with a pcie adapter?

I recently installed a pcie 4.0 x1 adapter for an extra SSD, solely for extra storage (games and such). The SSD used to show on a USB enclosure, and worked fine. Now it does not show anywhere on device manager, windows storage settings, disk management etc. The green light is on and I have tried to refit the adapter multiple times. My motherboard is an ASUS Prime a520mk if that's of any use. The only BIOS setting I can see about PCIE is the generation of the ports, which I have changed to the max available (3.0). I am not sure if I have missed any steps, I can't find anything other than it should just appear on device manager after plugging it in, and obviously it doesn't.

What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard? What processor/APU do you have paired with the motherboard?

What BIOS version are you on for your motherboard? What processor/APU do you have paired with the motherboard?

My processor is an AMD ryzen 5 4500 6-core, and my bios version is American Megatrends Inc. 3402 (In BIOS it says 3402 x64)
