ok, whenever i boot up i get a blue screen and when i do "press any key" the screen goes black and there is a grid of white dots. then i press ctrl-alt-del and it resets and boots up fine. sometimes it just plain old locks up, but whichever one it is the point is that first boot up messes up and every boot after that is ok. at first i thought this was because i overclocked my p4 but it's still doing it now that the cpu is stock speed.

so my question is, has anyone seen this before? i am hoping that i just ahve to reinstall win98 and that it's not defective hardware. it's funny that this started happening when i started to overclock though, oh well. any comments or sugestions before i reinstall win98 this weekend?

Sure I've seen BSoD's almost daily on 98 =).

Try going into information under system tools and run system file checker and see if you have some corrupted files, if you do you'll be prompted for your Win 98 SE installation disk, pop it in the CD rom and restore your corrupted files that may solve your problem. Overclocking your Front Side Bus affects your memory and every PCI periferal you have in your system down to your harddrive, try System File Checker before you reload your system.

well i did run system file checker and it found a problem but it still had the problem. so i reinstalled the os and again had the problem. so like the dumb ass that i am i decide that only after re-installing my os that i would try puting my cpu back to stocka nd bingo, there i go. but i don't understand how so many people can overclock with the same equipment but i can't. could it be win98se, do i need to buy winxp?

you mean you had your cpu at above stock speed the whole time it was happening and didnt think to turn it dow when you got the BSOD. Whats wrong with you man!
Installing an OS on an overlocked computer is a very dangerous thing only people with great knowledge should do it. You were flirting wiht death boy!

What was that! 😱

so after all it wasn't the damn OS, it was the damn user who screwed up eh? :) Only if we could fix that problem between the chair and the keyboard, everything would be fine. 😉 heheh
