I have a virgin superhub 2ac downstairs and on 100Mb and getting upgraded to 150Mb soon, im currently on a wifi adapter on the desktop upstairs and it can fluctuate alot but rarely have I seen it reach even 90Mbits on the 5ghz network. So when i get upgraded to 150Mbps do you think a better option would be to get a powerline adapter to reach the closer advertised speeds. I get between 30-70 on average on the 5ghz network.

It is totally unpredictable since it is dependent on your house wiring. Just like you can not predict how fast wireless will be.

To get over 100m on powerline you need to get the newest technology. This is called AV2 but the vendors will have their stuff marked either 600m or 1200m. They get real life speeds closer to 150-200m.

When you are closer to the router wireless tends to be faster than powerline but the more distance and wall that you cross powerline gains the advantage.

The main advantage to powerline is the number you get will be very consistent which makes it better for games and other timing dependent stuff like some video streams.
