Hello tomshardware community,

We had recently some months ago moved in with a friend and about a month ago our laptops network connections would get random drops.

Daily we have time periods we can't connect to the router, can hardly connect to the router, or will work fine for a little bit.

I had borrowed a usb wifi adapter thinking maybe my network card was failing. (my issues started first) which had solved my problem but then the other computer started to do the same as mine did.

I had bought her a usb wifi adapter which had solved her problem for a day and then the netgear genie adapter network manager kept disconnecting and repeatedly asked her to connect via wps (which we prefer using the pass phrase). And for some reason the wps doesn't work on the router.

A day after her issues started with the usb my issues started back up, but not as bad.

We tried installing the stand alone driver but the disconnects continued. The day after, my issues started back up.

On my computer at times the network will only work if i disable one of the network connect devices. Sometimes when I disable the main network adapter the usb adapter connection disappears.

The router is a Netgear Genie WNR2000v4

speedtest.net results for Netgear A6100 usb adapter - (my computer)
Ping : 35ms
Download: 21.11mbps
Upload: 4.19mbps

speedtest.net results for Dell Wireless 1704 802.11b/g/n (2.4 ghz): (my computer)
Ping: 28ms
Download: 35.32mbps
Upload: 4.17mbps

When I use my Dell Wireless my speeds seem to fluctuate more.

I tried ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew and hasn't helped.

There are 5 devices on the network at any given time.

And both computers have freshly installed windows 7 with updated drivers. These problems were with older drivers as well as that is why we checked for updated drivers.

I am clueless on this one

Any help would be appreciated

Also, sometimes when the connection drops all our network connections in the list disappear

Cruzerfly,

Who administers the router?

Was the router's login name and password changed from the default settings?

Any priority users or related QoS settings in place?

Can you or the admin person get into the router to verify its configuration and look at the logs to see what the router is logging?

My friend owns the router, but doesn't know much about networking. I know a bit more of them than he does so I don't know how to answer the administrating question as I do try messing with settings to get the network working right. But I believe it is pretty default other than the connection info for the ISP.

The login name and password has not changed.

Under Qos Setup:
Enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia) settings is checked
Turn Internet Access QoS On is not checked
Turn Bandwidth Control On is not checked

Under Qos Policies there are about 30 basic items that I believe the router had created and some involve games that have been played on the network.
I can list those ?

I am able to get on the router.

The logs:
Have a bunch of "LAN access from remote"
Every now and then we get a few "DoS Attack: RST Scan" related stuff

It looks like the log may have been erased as it doesn't go back too far

Does the statement "The login name and password has not changed" mean that your are using something like "admin" and/or "password" to log into and configure the router.

I am not aware of any routers that come pre-configured to allow priority access to certain games or restrict access to other games. Someone had to set that up.

My suggestion is to go to Netgears website and download the user manual for your router.

I think this is the manual but you need to verify/confirm that I found the correct manual.

http://www.downloads.netgear.com/files/GDC/WNR2000V4/WNR2000v4_UM_8Feb2013.pdf

Then, at least, log into the router and change the login name and password. Be sure to write both down.

Next familarize yourself with the QoS settings and change those that do not apply to what you and your friends do. E.g., delete any games being given priority....

Once the router access and control is secured then we can move on from there.
