So, I’m sure you have seen those routers on Amazon that say 2450 mbps. I am thinking of buying one, but on my current WiFi system I have a modem and a router. For the Amazon router is it just a plug into the outlet and play, or does it need some sort of modem connection.

You'll need to conenct it by ethernet cable to your modem. The you'll need to connect your PC to it by ethernet cable so that you can set up the Amazon router.
The Amazon router will come with instructions.

Beware of marketing scams like '2450 mbps'. This is in theory or in a controlled lab environment--kinda like automotive 0-60 times are a professional driver on a closed course--ie, there's no way you're going to be able to do that.
