Wifi without contract

Have an Alcatel 5044R phone with Android 7. Want to root it one day but for now just want to sidestep a wireless contract and use wifi. Looking for guidance to configure this phone just for wifi... Guidance sought.

Turn on wifi on the phone and connect to your network. That's it.

If you want to disable the mobile network entirely put in in airplane mode first and then enable wifi. Although if you don't have a wireless plan and/or SIM, I don't think it could connect to a mobile network anyway.
