Will 8GB RAM work with 4GB ?

First of all, I don't know anything about dual channel or SODIMM. Forgive me.

I'm bought this laptop Asus R558UQ-DM513D today and it is just 4GB which is soldered on the machine. I want to play some modern games at low settings and I realized 8GB is minimum for playable gameplay.

Is it okay to add 8GB to this laptop (Max Exp is 12GB) ? I read in some forums it's not good to use different capacity RAMs together.

It is perfectly fine to add another 8 Gigs of Ram, the machine will work as expected. People usually advise against asymmetric RAM configurations as it prevents the RAM from running in dual channel mode. But considering yours is just a dual core ulv cpu, it shouldn't really make a difference. The extra RAM will come in handy for stuff like chrome. You should expect a solid 30-40 fps at low-mid settings at 720p in most modern games.

According to ASUS it is upgradable UP TO 12GB so if you put a 8GB stick in (1x SODIMM) it would work. It doesn't make sense if it was soldered.. if you can upgrade your ram.

About SO-DIMM, All laptop RAMs are SODIMM right? I just need to make sure the frequency (2133MHz) and the data rate (DDR4) are the correct ones and buy a RAM from the store, is that right?

I'm just clearing my doubts on this laptop. Is it okay? Maybe other users have the same laptop and maybe confused about RAM and Graphics Cards as well This might help them too

That being said, if you carefully monitor the temps and as long as the CPU/GPU temps don't shoot beyond 90C, you could use a little bit of overclocking. Moderate overclocking with a strict monitoring on temps is pretty safe on laptops. Also, you don't have voltage control, so its not like you will be able to achieve insane overclocks. I've personally overclocked laptop GPUs before, my current laptop GPU is overclocked too. If your components temps are well within limits, trust me it doesn't really impact the lifespan all that much

Start up MSI afterburner.
Bump up the GPU core clocks in steps of 50 MHz and run 20 minutes of unigine heaven. Try to look for artifacting, and monitor your temps and make sure the temps are within limits.
If after 20 mins it doesn't crash, repeat the above step.
After you encounter your first driver crash, dial back to the previous stable overclock. Repeat the same steps, but this time increase the clockspeed in steps of 10 Mhz.
And repeat until you crash, or temps exceed safe limits.
Once you get a maximum possible core overclock, do the same thing with the memory clocks.
After maximum overclock is achieved, save your profile and click on apply overclock at startup.

Points to be noted-

1) Never game while keeping the laptop on a soft surface like a bed. It blocks the vents and restricts airflow. Always keep the laptop on a solid surface like a table especially when overlclocked.

2) Getting a cooling pad is preferred.
