I have a old computer with a intel 2.6 HT processor and 1.5gb ddr1 ram and a pcie 1.0 slot. so i wanted to buy a graphics card that will play high definition vids very smoothly and it should also remove the load from the cpu. i was thinking of ati radeon 4350 pcie2.0 but i dont know if it work with my pcie1. slot as it is smaller in size...im sorry im a amatuer in this stuff...also can anyone name a few graphics card for me o play HD stuff very smoothly and will the above config suffice to play HD movies...thanks in advance

Could be, I'm not an HD video expert, but I tried any and everything I could before giving up on that old P4. I use klite in my 2 other machines and never had any problems playing the same HD movies I was trying to play on the p4.

you should try the divx codec (new version) or even cyberlink 10...in fact cyberlink 10 is the best coz it upscales vids very nicely and even uses HD lighting effect on SD vids also...and if u have a dual core you can try that...ill buy the HD 4350 ...i know im may risk spending more for the comp and not get much out of it..but i really want to spend on the lappy instead of upgrading my desktop...but thanks a ton for the advice though..will let you know how it turns out...

I think the problem was both. The P4 couldn't handle it but your card could. What you wanted to use was software that supports GPU accelerated decoding.

^Even after I installed codecs and was running in WMP11 the video still looked like it was less than 10 fps, but maybe that was a software thing and not the cpu because it was only showing like 17%. But running on VLC or anything flash was totally out of the question. 360p hulu videos in a quarter of the screen would peg the cpu at 99%. VLC could play 480p and below well but pegged the cpu on anything above that.

if u want a software that can accelerate video decoding by the GRAPHICS card....u can use core avc it has cuda acceleration for nvidia cards...its the thing that games use...

At first, u will need to know the diff between, PCIx16 1.0, PCIx1...
Why so many people confuse u...
This is my spec.
P4 3.0Ghz Prescott HT
D915gev MB
4G DDR2-800
9800GTX+ 512mb
Seagate barracude 1TB 7200.12 (win 7 64 bit)
MAxtor 80G (win xp pro 32bit)
CM GX-550
I can play 1080i on plasma 42" smoothly
Just a reminder, remember to get just a PCIx16 2.0 or 1.0 cards,
I tried to install 2.1 card but failed. hear about the 5000 series cards with never work in 1.0 slot also...
I got a MSI 4870 412mb OC version running in my system too.
maybe u want to post ur MB model so we can check for u the slot problems...
At first ur tread state clearly to check PCIx16 1.0 and 2.0 problems, but ended up with PICx16 or x1....
DUn know what happen...
