Will a single 980 be enough for a 1440p ultrawide or will I need to SLI?

I'm looking to buy a 1440p Ultrawide and currently have a 770. My 770 has trouble on my regular 1440p monitor in terms of maxing games so I was going to buy a 980 along with the new monitor. Do you think a single 980 will be enough for an ultrawide or will I need to SLI it? Either way I will be buying just one at first and then adding a second one if needed but I'm just trying to get an idea if I will need it or not so I can budget. Thanks!

A single GTX 980 will be enough to run most of the newer games at medium to high settings. If you want to Max out new games and still get ~60+ fps you will need to SLI them.

Pair of GTX970 would be the better priced option. Or buy the single 980 and see what it can do, then get another if you need to.
