I am running on an i3-3220, it has its limitations and I'm looking for an upgrade. So, an i5 that produces better results than my i3-3220 @ 3.3ghz but is able to function with my motherboard.

What motherboard do you have?

Generally, any i5 or i7 of the era should be compatible..... but if it's an OEM motherboard (from a Dell, Lenovo etc), you may have BIOS support limitations -- although admittedly, that's pretty unlikely.

You should be fine with any IvyBridge CPU... examples: i5-3330, 3550, 3570 or i7-3770.
You should also be fine with the slightly older SandyBridge i7-2600 etc.
