[SOLVED] Will Core i5 6400 bottleneck a GTX 1660 super.

I'm currently using a 1050ti . I would like to upgrade to a gtx 1660 super . Will my processor hold back the performance?
I plan to play games like Dying light 2 , Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal etc . Should I upgrade my processor, too?

Solution
I'm the kind of person who's very willing to turn down settings to get better performance before I think about spending money. I wouldn't have even bothered upgrading from a 1050Ti until the RTX2260s or GTX1870s came out.

In my opinion, there is absolutely nothing wrong with your current processor. There really isn't anything it cannot play and people have WAY overstated the impact of "bottlenecks". Your system is fine as it is and IMO, unless you've got $300 burning a hole in your pocket, no upgrade is needed.

The i5-6500 at 3.2ghz would be close to the i5-6400 at 3.1ghz. This shows you get some nice gains from a higher clock speed.

https://benchmarks.ul.com/hardware/cpu/Intel+Core+i5-6400+Processor+review

If you scroll to the bottom it shows that the Turbocore for 4 cores is 3.1ghz. From the stock 2.7ghz that is a nice 400mhz OC or boost on a locked chip. Make sure it doesn't overheat. It would be smart to at least clean the dust out of your cpu cooler first.

From a older post.

This worked well for my garage PC that's a modded SFF HP with a 2nd power supply, hd-4870, 32" 720p lcdtv, i5-2500, win7 x64.

I found that forcing the i5-2500 to always run at it's max 3.4ghz Four Core Intel Turbo Boost speed does help. It also stops the latest "Plundervolt" exploit from slowing down your cpu and then making the antivirus, ect. work on the slowest cores and from causing BSOD's if it manages to drop the voltage enough. (That happened 3 times until i figured it out.)

Make a shortcut to the startup file for it once you are happy with the way it runs.
Drag and drop the shortcut into Start\All Programs\Startup. It should run on startup.
In CPU-Z there is a option on one tab so you can see the speed of all 4 cores.
There is another program called Realtemp that also works.
In this vid he shows CPU-Z, ect. and how without it it throttles down to 798mhz.

The i5-2400 should be able to run on all 4 cores at 3.2ghz. A extra 100mhz is better than nothing on a locked board\cpu.

The Skylake i5-6400 at 2.7ghz has a pretty high cpu speed per core\per clock speed so it's IPC is pretty good.

If you have only 4gigs, you will want to consider 8gigs, or going for the Ryzen.

My results with my memory upgrade..8,915 4gb mem vs. 8gigs 9,176 that can overclock higher.

Ok i didn't expect that, but my A6-3650 holds the #1 and #2 spot for the fastest A6-3650.

Various intel i5's including a i5-6400 with a mid range GTX1060 6Gig that is close in speed to my GTX970. Also this is very close to how my system plays games at 1080p.
So a GTX1660 Super will do very well at 1080p with your i5-6400.

Okk, Thanks man. Yes, You're right. Since the pc is working , I should rather wait.
But the fact is that, one of my friend is willing to buy my cpu+mb. he would give me 150$ for it . Do you think then it will worth it to get a ryzen 5 3600 + new mb for 150$? (Sorry , English isn't my native language ...)

Ya then sell the 1050ti. If you sold him it with the 1050ti for $200 total that would give your friend a better deal, and you get some money from your card without having to spend time selling it and you have the money now.

I think you should go for the cheaper Ryzen5 2600 and a B450 board and put the savings into a faster video card like the GTX2060, RX5600XT, 5700, ect. But the 1660 super would be good too with the Ryzen 5 2600 or 2600X.

If you sell the board+cpu, it's pile of work to setup windows, ect. Keeping the i5-6400, saves you that work, just doing a video card swap is way easier.

-I meant just sell the video card, not everything. You also have to buy new memory too. It's best to also buy a bigger cpu cooler for the Ryzen cpu too.

The cost and time adds up.

For me, I'd still say no. Other's will disagree, but I just don't abide these middling upgrades.
