hi there, I have been searching on this forums for some time now and finally decided to register. I've decided to upgrade my 7870 to a gtx970 and will oveclock my atm stock AMD fx6300 (although I will upgrade to an i5 in the future), was wondering ig a Corsair CX500 will be enough for this and also want to know if my cooler (tx3 evo) will be enough for a mild OC...
my complete specs:
AMD FX 6300
Cooler Master TX3 Evo
g.skil rpijawz ddr3 1600 2x4gb
Sapphire Radeon 7870 ghz edition
1tb WD Caviar Blue
Corsair CX500 psu

thanks, and nice to be on the forums :bounce:

Solution
It should likely be fine for the GTX 970 for the time being as HD 7870 consumes more power than the 970.

BUT, OCing FX on this CPU is not recommended, CX uses low quality caps which are not rated to deliver high loads continously, so your OC may not be stable and the PSU may even fail, taking some components along with it.

So all in all, I think it's a bad idea to OC FX 6 on CX, but upgrading to 970 alone will likely not be an issue.

so, for the future, any good recomendation for a nice psu with a sensible price? like I said somewhere down the road I'm gonna get a i5 4690k and probably do some OC :D

oh, and in the corsairs defense I have to say my rig is now nearly 2 years old and haven't had any problems with the psu yet. haven't done any OC yet though

A cx500 will allow a gtx 970 & a fx6300 to be over clocked to the absolute limits of the chip itself EASILY.
You're looking at a max of 400w draw even with a 6300 at 4.5ghz & both CPU & GPU fully loaded.
Not going to get into a debate on the quality of corsair CX (I personally don't think they're bad psu's at all) but spec wise its not going be anywhere near stressed with this combo.

So what does it mean exactly?
Would you suggest it for stock FX 8350+970?
Would you not suggest it for i5 4790K with heavy OC and 750ti?

Cmon impress me with some logic because at this state of this topic this sentence looks like just copy/paste from "PSU guide for dummies"

thanks for the advice, although it seems like XFX isn't too easy to find here... seasonic, antec and Corsair are pretty easy to find though

they're a little cheaper as the others you're mentioned here, seasonic is about 150, rm about 110-120

No problem... On average is around 50 watts and considering performance that is negligeble... But if you thinking about overclocking you'll have to buy something around 650 watts, and if you consider SLI no less than 850 watts... That is my honest advice and anyone could arque with me if they think i'm wrong. And to note something, Gigabyte 970 gaming g1 on many review sites pull same or even more energy then reference 980 just for info... And i think that MSI version is somewhere around that or little lower, all other cards pull something like Asus strix.
And here is something interesting for you to read :)... So you can easily see how much power oveclocked fx 6300 needs...
http://www.techspot.com/article/932-amd-fx-8350-fx-6300-power-performance/

My recomendation for PSU: XFX XTR 550 W if you will not overclock gpu but cpu only... that should be enough
XFX XTR 650 W if you overclock both.

I listed that psus cause are available i croatia and are great, other members could list more. For sli you can take something of the same quality but with 850 watts...

thanks for the recomendations and the link, gonna check it out with a little more time tomorrow. don't think I'm gonna OC the gpu, don't play higher than 1080p anyway, so I think 970 will handle xD

Then feel free to go with RM. It's not bad, just as it's nothing better.

Also, as a side note, a decent quality 550W (which the RM is) will be plenty for max OC on both GPU and CPU. 750W will be plenty for two 970s.

Happy New year!

Hello again... Almost forgot. You could also take a look at Super flover golden green hx 650w. Found several reviews of theirs psu online and all are super positive so no reason not to consider them also...

@Alan Caldwell, if you answering on my post, then i have to tell you that evga is not available where i live... Only few motherboards and that is it... Super Flower is but not long. But concerning PSUs choice is even big enough, but some other hardware components are not. I've read review of evga supernova and i just can say that is pitty that psu is not available here. Ordering it online with other great psu at disposal is not my cup of tee, but for Aryend could be great if he can ordered it :)

And since we touching the psu for the combo of fx6300 and gtx 970 i feel need to say that is shame that nvidia did not allow wider tdp adjustments for both of the cards... And some more added voltage then 37 mV. Than this cards will be beasts for OC with no major energy consumption, bigger yes but no catastrophical. I've seen on overclock.net thread with custom bioses that this cards could easily go for 1700 MHz, and will go when this bioses mature enough.

that psu is more than enough for a 6300fx and a gtx970. even overclocked they whont draw that much power.
if you rune prime 95 and fur mark you might get around 450watt -500watt from the wall. (360 - 400watt real) and the corsair is rated for 500watt.
dont waste money on a PSU.
